We visited mid-week & off season. It was quiet, but all museums & sites were open.
For the small entry fee of 50 RMB, we were able to enter all sites within the town. To enter the water town itself payment is not required. Payment maybe required for parking car, not sure though.. Numerous places to eat. Lovely & interesting photo-ops. A temple is accessible as well. The area was clean. Comfortable day trip out of Shanghai city-proper. Would avoid visiting during holidays or the weekend as we suspect very busy. Due to time of year, most shops were closed, but that was okay for us. Worth the visit. Worth the drive. Architecture noticeably different than previous water towns we have visited.

A THREE hours ride for us from Pudong. Almost 2 hours on metro. Line 1 to Jinjang Park Station. One hour busride on the Feng Mei line straight to Fengjing. Town is serene and beautiful. As the Zongzi Festival (rice dumplings) is just next week, the whole town was at work. Fun to watch. Get to try varieties of freshly made rice dumplings. They can vacuum pack the dumplings for you if like for takeaway. Lovely experience exploring the town and then... the long ride home!

How to get there
1. Metro: get on line 1 and alight at Jinjiang Park station (锦江乐园)
2. Get out of station via Exit 2,North.
3. Turn left and walk till you come to a bus depot (it took us less than 1 min).
4. There are ticket counters at both ends of the depot. We found the ticket counter for the 'Feng Mei' line (枫梅线) at the far right of the depot.
5. Buy ticket (12 RMB per ticket)
6. Find the queue for Feng Mei xian (Feng Mei Line).
7. The non-stop ride to fengjing ancient town (枫泾古镇) takes about 45 min. Get off at the first stop.
8. You will be confronted with the service centre and the tourism info building. Basically a facade built in front of the town to make ill-informed tourists think the only way in is through.
9. To walk around the town is free. But for entry to certain tourist attractions, you need to buy tickets at the service centre. The service centre is staffed by rude and unhelpful staff , especially when they realised you are only interested in finding out how to get into the town for a walk. We would have bought tickets if the lady behind the counter had better attitude.
10. We found the way into the town to the left of the tourist trap; there was a street on the left of the facade. Follow that street and turn right and walk straight. You will find yourself in the town soon enough.
Getting back
1. Go the the same spot you alighted earlier. It's a spot by the road where buses stop but don't expect a bus stop. We waited by planters filled with pansies.
2. Wait for jinmei xian (金梅线) bus. Take that bus, it costed us 2RMB per person.
3. The bus will take you to a bus depot.
4. At the bus depot, you will be able to buy tickets for the fengmei xian (枫梅线)to go back to the bus depot at Jinjiang.
Experience
It was a beautiful town, not as commercialised as other tourist attractions. There are small groups of tourists here but they all looked Chinese to me, it was possible my husband was the only non-Chinese for miles around that afternoon.
I image the night scene would be magical with the lanterns lit and reflected on the water. Although it felt like we were invading the privacy of the residents, we were literally admiring the view in their back yard.

Beautiful ancient town. worth visiting if you have a half day in Shanghai, although it has become little touristy with Starbucks etc. Getting there was quite easy.
I took Line 1 to Jingjang park station and got out of exit 2. Walked right to the bus terminal. Walked to Feng Mei line ticket counter on the right side and bought a ticket for 12rmb. Stood in the line for Feng Mei line. There is a bus for every 20min from 6am. ( attached time table) I got down at the first stop after an hour drive. The bus stops in the middle of the road ( it is not the last stop as the bus goes to the terminal) and walked to the tourist information center got a map. The bus stop area is very modern and you need walk for 10min or so to reach the old streets. I dint buy a ticket and walked on the left side road to reach canal. There are 4lanes of old street along two intersecting canals. It was drizzling and not much crowded. I spent around 2hours walking around and the views were beautiful.
Getting back is little confusing. I went to the tourist information center and got instructions ( attached here) and still it was confusing for me. You have to stand in the same place where you were dropped off ( under the big TV screen ) to catch the Jin Feng line (金枫线) to go to terminal bus station. There is a bus stop 10meters just back of you from the road where a Jin Feng line (金枫线) bus stops. This is what confusing. But that bus goes on the opposite direction. So, you make sure you stand on the road where you dropped off and when you see a Jin Feng line (金枫线) run to the front door. It takes 2rmb to the bus station. You will see Feng Mei line also stops there but, they won’t take you.
You will be likely dropped off at the entrance of the terminal. You just cross the road walk right in the corridor of the big building. In 2min, you will see a big glass door on your left, once you enter there is a ticket counter for Feng Mei line on the right side. Stand in the line for the bus and get down at the last stop at Meilong station, the same place where you boarded the bus.

We hired a driver to take us to Fengjing and to Nanxun and, of the two, we preferred Fengjing. You do not have to buy a ticket to wander around the town but will need to if you want to go into any of the buildings (I'd recommend doing this). We visited on a Monday and it was fairly quiet with few tourists but, given the number of shops and restaurants which cater for visitors, it must get much busier at times. Very picturesque and easy to reach from Shanghai - a good trip out.

We went out to Fengjing on a day trip from Shanghai in 2nd January. It was a holiday in China and the town was not jam packed with tourists, though i've heard it tends to be quieter than some of the better known water towns around Shanghai even at peak times. The sun was shining and the air was crisp. We drove out there ourselves and from downtown it was a quick 30 minute drive though it is also easy to get to by public transportation. I've been to many water towns and found Fengjing to be particularly charming with things to see that rang in above and beyond just the usual pretty stone bridges and canals (of which there were also plenty). The cartoonist Ding Cong's house and humor entertained us greatly, as did the Red Army photo ops in the old "People's Commune" and the old bomb shelter. We stopped for lunch in the sunshine by the river and munched on three varieties of the must-try local specialty Zong Zi (rice and meat steamed in lotus leaves - you can see them being made outside on the street) which were all delicious and very filling. I also enjoyed the colorful farmer paintings and picked up a few to send home as Chinese new year gifts for the family, although we didn't have time to go out to the Farmer Painting Village itself. Overall it was a really nice day, not too crowded with a much more local vibe and full of what seemed to be locals enjoying a day out rather than busloads of tourists shipped in. Definitely recommended. It's pretty easy to get there yourself though I saw Ctrip actually have a special offer one day only trip out there on March 17 2012 for just RMB 199 (http://activities.english.ctrip.com/activities/65588/) which is a great value way to enjoy a hassle free visit with an English speaking guide.

Relaxing & beautiful place depicting everyone's internal vision of old China, - waterway canals, cherry blossom trees. arched bridges, beautiful architecture, history and happy people. In many of the daily activities tasks are done "the old way" a there is no need to rush - the pace is tranquil. You need to look at what is happening around you - see the people sweeping the street with twig brooms - not commercially made brooms or mechanised street sweepers.

If you have a chance to get out to this beautiful water town, you won't be disappointed. It was reasonably busy with Chinese tourists, but as westerners, we appeared to be the only ones, as such, we ended up in a few photos, as people took photos of us, either walking or in the little boat on the canal. The moment we stepped into the town, we were transported back to what my husband and I had imagined as
old China. What a beautiful original old town this is. We had hired a guide from Shanghai for the day, so we were able to experience local train and bus to and from Fengjing, also hiring a trishaw to take us to the bus after our day in the town. Our guide Jin, was great in advising us of local foods, and ordering at one of the many outdoor food areas. To have someone to explain all signs, and interpret when we had questions of the area and the locals, made it a perfect day, in a perfect ancient town.

Fengjing Ancient Town, a Magnificent Canal Town, is also known as "water town" whereby the dam was built to keep and control the water level at an optimum height so that the "sampan" or "Boat Ride" can be performed at any time of the day for tourists. This is one of the great scenic spots in Shanghai that tourists must not miss in their travel itinerary.
Indeed, this water town has maintained and protected for the peasant well doers for its ancient architecture, classic Chinese water town planning, great food, and scenic sight-seeing opportunities.
Remember to sit in at one the small "Restaurants" to enjoy the tasteful dishes originated from the Ancient Chinese, and you will never forget of the "intrinsic value" of the food that is served hot and yet cheap.
If you have opportunities and time, please do step into for a boat Ride to enjoy a better view of the banks of the River Canal whereby all sorts of trades are conducted.
