Shanghai's Jewish legacy and experience. A half day eye-opening tour of an extraordinary story guided since 2002 by Israeli Journalist Dvir Bar-Gal. From the media: "Bar-Gal, rich with knowledge and full of humor, takes his visitors along on a mesmerizing journey into an amazing, sweet and sour world. A world where opium dealers, old world colonialists, real estate moguls, hard working poor Chinese migrants and Jewish holocaust survivors mix. "

This is a must for every person interested in the Jewish history of Shanghai. Dvir is one of the best tour guides I have had. His enthusiasm, immense knowledge of the Shanghai Jewish history, his superb understanding of the motives that bring about historical events, and his willingness to discuss and answer questions make this tour perfect. His presentation is... More

Dvir was a superb guide giving us a balance of details and visual experiences over 5 hours. His personal passion and expertise especially regarding his efforts to save the tombstones of the destroyed Jewish cemeteries and create a memorial using the stones he has saved is a mitzvah. I would recommend one take the Coursera class on the history of... More

At the end of a two week tour of mainland China, our last day in Shanghai was on our own and we wanted to do something different. We booked Dvir's tour before leaving the US based on the excellent reviews on TripAdvisor. We were not disappointed. While we were aware of some of the history regarding the Jews in Shanghai,... I don't usually enjoy group tours, especially one that lasts several hours... but Dvir's tour simply blasted away any expectations. It was fun, entertaining and very educational. The time flew by as Dvir shared his encyclopedic knowledge through stories that brought the remarkable history of the Jews in Shanghai to life. I highly recommend his tour to anyone who visits... Our group of 8 were met at our hotel by Anfisa for a private tour. We started with a historical prospective on the history of the Jewish Community of Shanghai and how the "open port" allowed approximately 23,000 Jews to find safety from the Holocaust. This was followed by a tour of Ghetto and an explanation of why the Ghetto... More

This tour came highly recommended to me by a Chinese friend who lives in Shanghai. She had taken the tour and felt like it would be the best use of my very limited site-seeing time in Shanghai. I was able to book at short notice through a combination of emails and phone calls. I am not Jewish, but I find... More

People talk about how Jews came to live in Shanghai and then all left some 70 years ago, before trickling back a few years ago. Life most migration stories, be it in China or elsewhere in Asia or even in Europe, there is always a rich history and tours relating to immigration are always fascinating. Perhaps none more fascinating than... More

I had a free day while on business in Shanghai and Dvir fitted me in on a already complete tour. A fantastic experience! An amazing story told by a very competent story teller. The story that is so well personalized makes this the premier tour to go on if you are interested in general Shanghai history or specifically Jewish Shanghai... More

There are very few tours that exceed one's expectations, but this did. Dvir was very knowledgeable, as well as being interesting and entertaining. The tour is comprehensive and gives an excellent overview of the role of Jews in Shanghai. He went out of his way to make our experience excellent. Great tour, great value for money, and very informative. We... More

Staying in Gubei / Hongqiao / Minhang

Neighbourhood Profile
Gubei / Hongqiao / Minhang
West of Shanghai’s better-known business, cultural and entertainment centers, lies an expansive area of residential neighborhoods peppered with lifestyle pockets that have their own unique attractions. The schools have formed pockets of international communities throughout Gubei, Hongqiao and Minhang. Quite a few entertainment and shopping centers have built up over the years to cater to these communities. While living here means you are relatively far away from Shanghai’s usual hot spots, the large parks, spacious homes and proximity to great Japanese and Korean food keep the neighborhoods popular.
