I was in October 2023 at their performance in Shanghai.
Don’t mislead people!!!😡 There was no smell of jazz there, no swing, syncopation, improvisation. Just 5 old men playing according to the notes in even quarter notes and eighth notes, at the tempo of a march, without hitting the notes. Any children's school musical group will play much more professionally. Name the group “Old band”, don’t deceive the public, they don’t know how to play jazz!😠
I left their performance with great disappointment😔

I don't usually share reviews on tripadvisor unless I have a super good or bad experience. I made a booking for two last Thursday and called twice to confirm the booking and minimum spend per person (300 RMB each. They said when booking). I arrived and had two stand for two minutes without being attended. Finally one lady approached. Took me to the table and stated that minimum spend per person is 400! I explained what happened. She replied very rude. Long story short she was like "well. Ok ok. Damn it take it for 300 RMB per person". Of course I called for a manager. She replied that manager is off today. (obviously there is noone in the charge of the restaurant. She was trying to get rid of me by saying no manager was on duty). I said call me someone in charge then. A gentleman came very polite tried anticipate at least. But I don't think any action taken or investigate with the restaurant reservations. One is saying something other one is saying another thing. They have no communication and no training to handle these kind of situations. I will never come and recommend the place to anyone as a hotelier working in Shanghai. Terrible experience...

The Peace Hotel in Shanghai is a throw-back to the 1930's and the jazz club tries to reflect that. The house band, called the Old Jazz Band, is famous and many visitors to Shanghai think this is a must-see attraction. So did I, and let me tell you it is a colossal waste of time and money.

Entry alone requires that you spend a minimum of nearly $100 a person on food and drink, and believe me that happens fast with their over-priced menu. But maybe the show will make it all worthwhile, right? Wrong!

The Old Jazz Band is a collection of musicians whose minimum age is certainly over 70. Nothing wrong with that; I am almost that age myself. But what they play is not jazz as much as it is elevator music, and it is obvious that they are simply not trying. No solos, just standard 3-4 minute tunes with nothing at all remarkable. And check this out. Just before they started a set I approached the band leader to make a request, but he refers me to the maitre 'd who tells me that requests cost $20 US!

Terrible rip-off experience.

Nearly everyone we came across recommended this as a Shanghai "must-see', so we saved it for our last evening. The RMB400 minimum spend was steep, but we figured it was worth it.

If you're short on time, money or patience... skip. Highlight of the night was the double bass player taking up arms against the score with a maracas solo. We legit thought he had fallen asleep before that moment.

Jokes aside - these Shanghai staple characters have killed it for years, but I feel have been setup to fail with an acoustically bankrupt bar, horrendous sound leveling and overpriced drinks. Would be great to see them in a bigger, friendlier venue. Until then, there are much better bars on the Bund.

Yes one of the Saxophonists was off key, and the piano needed tuning, but the band members are all over 80! This isn't jazz as most of us know it but the bar is beautiful, it is a great excuse to visit the stunning Fairmont Peace Hotel and I hope I can still be playing when I am 80 plus. Note that despite their age, the saxes still check social media during trumpet solos, so some things never change! One note of caution, there is a 400RNB (£40) per person minimum ticket, which caught us out as we only popped in for pre-dinner drinks. G

My husband was keen to visit the jazz bar having fallen in love with the architecture of the hotel and wanting an old Shanghai experience. We didn't book a table but we're able to sit at the back of the bar on stools. The experience was disappointing to say the least. We were told there was a minimum spend of 200 yuan each so we ended up ordering a bottle of French champagne and also a bottle of water ( over priced with a 15% surcharge on top) but the music was very average. While the female singer was very good the music didn't gel well and the accompanying musicians were lack lustre and didn't really give a positive vibe to the place. Look elsewhere for more atmosphere!

Underwhelming and not living up to expectations. The band seemed to be going through the motions and uninterested in entertaining the audience. If they weren't listlessly playing, they were either on their phones or napping.

Venue is very well done, however and the bar and cocktails were quite good.

We came on a Monday night with no reservation. The cover was 400CNY with reservation and 200CNY without, but you can run your bar food/drinks' cost against cover charge.

It was fascinating and equally entertaining to watch/listen to octogenarians playing classics and pop-jazz. Around 930sh, the band was replaced by a relatively younger members, and played a more uptempo music. They have a guest soloist who sang Chinese songs. The guest soloist was ok but I enjoyed just the band playing.

Overall, i recommend it for a touch of culture and somewhat unique experience. It is not cheap though, but then that's expected of Peace Fairmont Hotel.

What a fun way to spend an evening. The crowd is quite varied, and the crusty old dudes can still pound out the standards with great elan. I would frequent this place as often as I would come to Shanghai

It's definitely a must see (at least once) if you are traveling in Shanghai and like to listen to Jazz. The place has a nice decor, the music is good and clear. A bit outdated though but I guess it is supposed to be.

To get there take the 2nd line to East Nanjing Road, but a tip is to avoid the road and take a parallel street to reach the hotel, and thus avoid the sea of tourists. The club is also quite expensive with a minimum charge of 200 per person + 15% service charge. This will be enough to buy 2 beers.
