Top ways to experience Shanghai Grand Theater
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: People’s Square
People’s Square brings with it all the excitement you would expect from the town square of one of the biggest cities in the world. The area around People’s Square and People’s Park is always a abuzz with activity. Oceans of local and foreign tourists flow in and out of the area every day to see grand museums, go shopping and eat at some of Shanghai’s most storied food centers. Shanghai residents, meanwhile, live and work in the many residential and office high-rises. While much of Shanghai stays busy late into the night, this really is an area that never sleeps with glitzy nightclubs keeping people up until the wee hours of the morning.
How to get there

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Grand art deco cinema, beautifully restored. Note that this review just covers the cinema portion of the Shanghai Grand Theatre complex. This part of the complex includes 8 good modern multiplex cinemas and the restored Grand cinema 1, which seems to be only open for special occasions, and the cinema lobbies. The art deco lobbies are superb, and seem to be free to view. See photos. Western movies are quite expensive but worth it for the total cinema experience. Must see for movie history and art deco lovers.

the Shanghai Grand Theatre is located downtown Shanghai near People Square subway station ( Renmin Guangchang) , just a few foot steps to several others interested sights of Shanghai. Take the subway from all regions of Shanghai to the city centre to visit an amazing performance at the Shanghai Grand Theatre. I ve been there in September 2009 for an australian dance and music performance. the accoustics are great and the light effects had been beautiful. I will come again, for sure!

I have been to a few shows at this location. I have always had a great seat at a very reasonable price. The sound is great and the types of performances varied. I would reccomend checking out the schedule regularly and seeing some great shows!

A half moon designed architecture that provided excellent shows of the world at the central location in Shanghai. Shanghai Grand Theater is a perfect place for the performance of concert, opera and shows. The famous shows such as: Lion King, Mama Mia…etc. You must enjoy it!

I have been to many shows here, both music, ballet and theaters, and it is a good place. Check out what they offer!

iconic building, stunning rooftop, but staff and not trained well, no feeling of 1st class event, rather unwelcoming and mass crowd feeling from box office, ushers etc... Seats are narrow, sight lines are reasonable, and the physical stage itself is world class. Programming is questionable -- would prefer to see quality world class productions instead of current majority of offerings.

We attended a concert of Western music in this spectacular new concert hall building (across the street from the Shanghai Museum in People's Square). The acoustics were quite good, and the architecture is spectacular. There was no taxi line after the concert; almost everyone seemed to walk down the street to the People's Square subway station (where taxis also cruise).

Been here several times for the SAS high school graduation--central location that is intimate but can accommodate nearly 700 people

Are there any places to eat in the theater complex itself !?

Hi Everybody,
the website only had information in Chinese - how do you buy tickets??
Written 2 October 2015
If you can't go to buy the tickets in person, I would recommend going to en.damai.cn and clicking for the filters: Shanghai (location) and Theater (type). The venue shows up as "Shanghai Grand Theatre"
Hope this helps :)
Best,
Daniela
