About
A private art gallery founded by the Chinese art collector Liu Yiqian and his wife, Wang Wei, the Long Museum (West Bund) is currently one of the most influential of its kind in China. Located at the former site of Beipiao Wharf, the museum features its main building shaped in a “coal funnel” highlighting its architectural characteristics of the industrial civilization legacy, forming a remarkably artistic public space of contemporary urban culture and arts.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The museum is basically a few small galleries inside a cavernous concrete shell. Some of the works are good, especially the old traditional Chinese paintings, but there is nothing too special. There are also special exhibitions on as well, but the one I went to was a rip-off with higher admission than the actual museum and barely anything in it.

Most of the photos posted here, as well as the current Olafur Eliasson exhibit, are of the West Bund location. The address listed here is for the Pudong location which is quite far out for anyone staying near the Bund or French concession. There should be two different entries for each location!
The address for the West Bund location is: Lane 3398, Longteng Avenue, Xuhui District, Shanghai and is a 15 minute walk from Middle Longhua Road on Line 7. The building sits just off of the river, so you can enjoy a fairly quiet stroll along the river (almost desolate compared to the Bund).
Admission was pricey (150rmb) but I quite enjoyed the Eliasson exhibit and there were far fewer people here than I expected. There is very limited information on the installations, though. There are no names posted or any information aside from a basic brochure given to me when I bought my ticket. I recommend going to artist's website if at least to see which installations were specially constructed for this museum.

An expansive new museum holding (part of) the private collection of Wang Wei and Liu Yiqian, this museum is itself an exhibit of the clash of capitalism (super wealthy collectors) in a supposedly communist country. You will especially enjoy the irony of the extensive art on Revolutionary Art. It's a very large museum, with an extensive collection of modern art to imperial artifacts. Because it's out in Pudong, tourists seems to have not yet found this place--I spent the half a day here with no one else in the building other than a few staff. You can easily get here: take the subway to the end of line 7, Huamu Road, then walk east along Huamu Road until you pass under the Inner Ring Elevated Road, and you're there.

walked to this museum, the outside is lovely with cherry blossoms this time of year. The museum, however, is hilariously overpriced: 200 RMB, which is over $30 USD (no student or senior discounts available) which is more expensive than MoMA, the new Whitney, The Met, etc. any world class museum. I actually laughed when they told me the price. The fact that this museum is owned by a billionaire makes this price tag a bit offensive. If you go, enjoy the outside, but please don't pay this foolishly high admission price. Think of what you can get in China for RMB 200!

The architecture of this museum is truly breathtaking. The spaces themselves, especially with the lines of construction, are astonishing. The large ground floor allows for large installations in a space befitting them.
I enjoyed the challenging contemporary works juxtaposed with the more classical pieces downstairs. Well curated and well run.

The Long Museums are confusing as there are TWO, one on Pudong side and the other on the old Bund side of Shanghai, labelled “Xi’an”.
There are world class special exhibitions and a very good, well-curated exhibition on Chinese realist art. The labeling has some English translation but help from a Chinese speaker is useful.
But good heavens it expensive by Chinese standards — compared to typical admission fees of 40 CNY, Long Museum is 250 CNY more than $40 per person.

The Museum has held some very interesting shows of international artists such as Olafur Eliasson and James Turrell. They also feature some of the most cutting-edge Asian and Chinese artists in a variety of shows. But they balance this with shows of traditional Chineses calligraphy and ceramics. Very interesting museum.

Best Ever Dutch Masters Exhibition! There are several locations for Long Museum in Shanghai. Taxied (or rather called for DD driver) to the location on West Bund for the exhibition on a Saturday. No crowds! Bit pricey (CNY200 each) yet very worth it. I have been to fine museums in Europe and USA. Why was this top drawer? Curation - not an expert, know what is a good education for art lovers and this exhibit educated us, richly. Lighting - this was fairly large traveling exhibition, each room well done and lights placed different angles, paintings came alive, what can I write, have to feel it. Security - ever-present, polite, well mannered, diligent, on their feet without being annoying. Warning - No Place to Sit to rest! Go to teahouse afterwards to rest and reflect.

Respecting the past, present and the future, The Long Museum simultaneously hosts two world class exhibitions of two first class artists -Gormley and Rembrandt. For most international museums hosting one exhibition of this calibre each year is an accomplishment; for The Long Museum it proves it aspirations are sky high.

I am not the first to make the observation that there are two main Long galleries reviewed under the same TripAdvisor site moniker. The address indicated here is the smaller venue which is in Pudong and the one that we visited. If coming by metro, it is a relatively straightforward walk in an area populated with massive exposition halls. We were drawn to the current Revolutionary Art exhibition and we were both admitted with a lower priced senior's ticket. Our pocket books have so far balked at the pricier sister gallery on the Bund. This display of politically correct art was fascinating and well worth the effort in seeking out. There was also a smaller area displaying modern acquisitions which we rated as a value added bonus.
