The area
Neighbourhood: Xintiandi
The refurbishment of a block of old shikumen into a carless entertainment center called Xintiandi, filled with restaurants, shops and bars, turned this area below South Huangpi Road into one of Shanghai’s most fashionable areas. Luxe condos house people who can afford the high-end brands that fill the malls and shops along Madang Road. The pleasant Taipinghu Park provides the area with green space and is also home to Shanghai Fashion Week twice a year. It’s not all glitter and glamour, though, as the rise of Danshui Road has given the Xintiandi area a shot of toned-down character. Small bars and cafes, mostly owned by locals, have people hanging out in a formerly quiet, unassuming part of the neighborhood.
How to get there

Beautiful architecture and a wide range of expensive restaurants and shopping here. Good to just sit with a beer and people-watch!!! Especially if the weather is cool and nice.

Cute little shop for beautiful, tastefully designed porcelain tea sets & accessories, cloisonne jars, handbags, & other gifty items. There are some really unique and beautifully made items which have a contemporary East meets West style which make great momentos of a visit to Shanghai, the epitome of the modern Chinese metropolis.
My favorite items were by Asianera (beautifully handpainted china), PlingPlang (cloisonne jars), and Shaoo (hand bags).
It's a fun little shop to browse. Be careful because you might just walk by it & miss it.
I was strolling around the huge xintiandi area (lots of shopping & restaurants) & just happened upon it. The sales person there was very helpful & friendly, & really seemed to know the products.

Just in case you're expecting something more, this is basically an upmarket pedestrian mall. There are however a few museums tucked in here which are okay. Shikumen Open House Museum has a few rooms decorated in 20's/30's furniture and give a small insight into what it might have been to live in this area back then. Museum of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party is also in this area, but I didn't go.
The reason I've been to this area twice is to get to the Crystal Jade Restaurant, which is in the shopping centre end of the mall, on the second floor. Great food each time and a nice place to cool your heels if you've been walking a while.

Located at Dapu station, the small shop outlet here sell variety of item, it is like a maze here with 3 entrance to this place, but all 3 entrance are not interconnected, there are also pub and restaurant here where you can hang out. Worth coming if you are in Shanghai for the first time.

We had some free time and decided to take a cab to Xintiandi from our hotel in Pudong. The place was packed with tourists, both locals and foreigners. Though there was a slight drizzle, it didn't discourage us from checking out the various nooks and crannies. The area had a lot of restaurants to choose from and we grabbed some ice cream from Haagen Daaz. There were lots of nice and interesting boutiques to check out. Our only problem was getting a taxi back to our hotel and some of the cab drivers didn't want to bring us back or wouldn't use a meter. Some were charging as much as 200-25o rmb whereas it had only taken us about 27-35 rmb getting there.

I did not spend a lot of time here, it's a small area in the middle of a Shanghai area. It has bars, restaurants, wine bars, chocolate shops, etc as well as "Xintiandi Style" which is an indoor shopping mall through which you walk to get access to the subway.
The crowd had a lot of non-Asian business people having lunch on one of the terraces.
I quickly walked through the small area and had a look at the shops but did not spend more than 40 minutes here because it does not have any local flavor but that is the charm of Shanghai, there are so many micro-neighborhoods.
I did enjoy the quick walk. If you're looking for a European style bar or a nice clean place to lunch it will do the trick. To have a real Chines experience including food and shopping it will not.

Every time I go to Shanghai, I love going here. They have a nice selection or shopping and food, plus pretty architecture. There is a lot of shopping just outside of this area too.

Xintian di or the "place of heaven" is one of the interesting touristic places of shanghai. However if you live in shanghai also is a good place for shopping or dining. Specially a perfect place to find a food terrace in summer.

My recent visit to Shanghai was my first and the city surprised me in countless ways. One of them was the XinTianDi district - a modern (though it felt more historic given the brick structures) shopping and dining district that simply sparkles at night and is crowded with tourists and locals alike. There's a blend of some interesting boutiques, North American chains, middle to high end restaurants and bars. It's best to visit at night when the lights create a magical look and feel and the crowds create a festival like atmosphere.

We took a stroll last night through XianTianDi. The main "street" is a pedestrian way. You can stroll by many restaurants and shops, many built into old building facades. It's lovely to stop and have dinner or a drink at the any of the restaurants with outdoor seating. Many of the restaurants are international, so if you're into that, you'll love your eating options.
I think it's probably particularly appealing at night - lots of lights twinkling. Shops are OK and many very pricey. We saw 3 different Maybacks parked around last night, with lots of other premium cars not seen elsewhere in the city.
We also popped into several of the indoor shopping malls. One, Xintiandi Style, had a very large International Supermarket in the basement, called Bazaar.
Definitely a pleasant way to while away an evening.
