There are 3-4 chocolate tours around the area and this one was great. You can make reservations online or call/WhatsApp to make them.

Started looking at trees and explaining the growth and history of the area. Then moved to the “kitchen” and participated in all of the steps of chocolate making. Went home with a bag of coco nibs and many small chocolates.

We did bring a 6 month old and it was great. One of us was able to step away and feed him/change diaper without a giant interruption. We did talk with her first and she said it would be okay.

I think some of the other tours have a greater focus on the cocoa plant and looking at the plantation. This has some of that, but is more hands on with a focus on the chocolate. The 2.5-3 hours went by really fast.

Absolutely lovely morning spent with Ancel who was a wonderful host. She explained in detail the history of chocolate, how it moves through the process from pod to chocolate bar and how she makes her very special own brands. She was funny, engaging and super helpful. Highly recommended to anyone visiting the area!

I had a lovely time in the Talamanca Chocolate workshop. Ancel, the owner, is delightful and a fountain of chocolate knowledge (pun intended). Ancel will walk you through the bean to bar experience starting with her beautiful cacao orchard. You will learn how to roast, winnow(remove shells) and grind cacao beans all the while tasting the many varieties of delicious Talamanca chocolate. Spending time with Ancel and eating Talamanca chocolate was the highlight of my Puerto Viejo trip.

We really loved this workshop! Ancel is a passionate teacher and tells you a lot about cacao trees and the history which is very interesting. After that she goes through the process of making chocolate step by step. It is a must do if you are in the area!

Heartening to see ethical and sustainable approaches to chocolate making. This is obviously a passion for Ansel and her team. I learned a lot from the visit to the cacao trees, right through to the production process. Making our own chocolate to take home was an additional and welcome bonus!

Hubby and I booked a traditional plant medicine class through Airbnb in late July and had the pleasure of meeting Ancel and Sam. We were the only people on the tour that day. It was raining heavily on the afternoon of our class, so she modified it to include inside and outside components. Ancel was incredibly knowledgeable and taught us about plants before we explored the abundant garden and sampled different leaves as we learned about their medicinal properties and traditional uses. We enjoyed tea brewed from our favorite leaves as we chatted about plants, life in Costa Rica, family histories, pets, and many other things. We later ran into Ancel at the farmers market on Saturday and saw the many chocolate goodies she and her husband had for sale- visit their table if you get a chance. The class was a great experience and we highly recommend it or any of her other classes! I hope you enjoy the photos I shared.

Thank you! It was a pleasure working with you in the chocolate kitchen! The medicinal values of cacao are as wonderful as the best plant medicines. So glad you shared part of your vacation with me! Best wishes to you both (and the dog and cats!) Ancel

Ancel is very knowledgeable about chocolate from bean to finished product. This is a hands on workshop and fun not to be missed if you are a fan of chocolate. She gives the history of the cocoa tree and participants take part in making chocolate from bean to finished product. Small group activity so everyone takes part. Great to meet new people who share a love of chocolate!

An absolute highlight of my trip to Costa Rica. The education we received during our class was valuable in so many ways. Truly, cacao is in its entirety, is a medicinal plant and this class covers all aspects from the very start. We received education on what we eat at home (for me the states) but also much of what we do love (Hersheys? never again...) is only 10% cacao. This class will not only open your eyes but you will leave with a whole new appreciation for chocolate and revel in all its wonders. Don't miss this. Entirely worth it!!

We loved our morning at Talamanca Chocolate Farm. Ancel has an incredible knowledge about cacao and chocolate, from use in medicine over challenges in the modern chocolate industry. The farm is so cute, there is a super relaxed vibe about the place. We brought our 3 yrs old son and Ancel was so welcoming with him When he got restless we were able to let him roam around the farm and feed the chicken and play with the dogs.

We loved everything about the experience, you will make your own chocolates as well as tasting traditional hot chocolate.

They also sell their own chocolate bars if you are interested, they make super cute gifts (approx 1400 c per bar).
