Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Although I was working as a volunteer in another conservation project in CR (in Ojochal), during my days off I went to Romelia to volunteer for 5 days. It has been a wonderful experience: doing something that you know does matter and does make a difference!!! Moreover, the people working there are amazing, it felt like having another family. Also, the remote area where it is located is a must see: far from any town and people and therefore there is a lot of wildlife. Hope to visit Romelia again some day soon!

I booked a month of Volunteering in Romelia. At first I didn´t know what to expect. It turned out to be the best month of my life so far. Working on a lonely beach in a super relaxed atmosphere, taking care of baby turtles. If you want to calm down and find your inner peace, this is the place for you. I can only recommend it to anybody who wants to go there. You will understand what Pura Vida means.

I had the opportunity of volunteering at Romelia last turtle season and can't stay away. I got so much experience in measuring and tagging turtles, patrolling the beaches, relocating nests, and releasing hatchlings. It was an amazing experience to connect with nature, be surrounded by birds and monkeys, and learn to live a more simplified life. Working with sea turtle conservation is extremely rewarding and I can't wait to return to my Romelia family in September.

What an amazing time I spent volunteering at Romelia during four weeks in oct/nov... Thank you all for this special and unique experience!!
Living a simple life in a rustic wooden house in the middle of a great nature and wildlife, being surrounded by the sounds of the jungle and the sea all day long, this was just marvellous!
I loved all the work we did: observing turtle nests in the hatchery, releasing babies to the sea and patrolling at night as well as helping out in the garden, making tortillas or beach cleaning. I had so many unforgettable moments while watching hatchlings crawling to the ocean or a mother turtle leying eggs or while discovering an iguana that was hiding behind the curtain in the bathroom... :) And the stuff was awesome! We were like a family. We had so much fun while working or beside work, making crazy movies behaving like monkeys or singing our self created Romelia song. This place was really inspiring!
Saying good-bye was an emotional act. I didn't want to leave anymore... Refugio Romelia has its place in my heart forever! Pura Vida!!!

Myself, my brother, and two friends only spent one week volunteering at the Romelia refuge, but it was enough to completely fall in love with the place. The work was meaningful and fun, the staff was amazing, and everyone we met there really made us feel welcome. It's impossible to describe how amazing it is to live surrounded by incredible wildlife, falling asleep every night to the sound of waves crashing on the beach. Watching a turtle lay her eggs was one of the coolest experiences of my life, and it's something everyone should see! I can't thank everyone enough for an amazing week at such an amazing place. Romelia is wonderful!

I volunteered in the Refugio Romelia from November 2013 till January 2014. It was amazing being able to help in the turtle project, but also working in the vineyard maked my stay unforgettable.
You live close to nature and see new animals every day: butterflies, monkeys, birds, insects, etc. I'm definitely going back one day to enjoy the pure and simple life at Romelia. It makes you aware of what is really important in life! So, to everyone who would like to get away from everything for a while and just enjoy nature, make new friends and help to conserve the beautiful beach and forest ... go to Montezuma for at least 1 month and see how little turtles crowl to the wide open sea!

When I first came to Romelia, I had booked only two weeks. At the end I spent six wonderful weeks there and it would have become more, if I had disposed of more time. I loved just everyting about it. Thanks to the wonderful people working in the refuge, it took maybe ten minutes to make me feel at home. The work experience was just what I had been looking for, it was hand-on experience and you really got the feeling that you were doing something good for the environment and the animals. I went there when it was no tutle season but there were so many other great things to do that I did not miss it. I really recommend this place to everyone who is interested in turtles, animals in general and nature. Thank you so much, Romelia! I hope to see you soon!

I have been to Romelia twice for the past turtle season. The people there are very special and I felt at home the minute I got there. We were talking and joking non-stop right off the bat. It is so rustic and magical there. It feels like you are staying at the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse. You walk down the path and you are at the beach. You can listen to the waves rock you to sleep at night. The turtles are amazing and you will surely never forget the experience of seeing the mother lay her eggs or of releasing the hatchlings of another mother into the waves! Love it!!

I’m not sure I really saw much of this area, nor am I sure it’s really accessible. But here’s what I know:

To access you just drive from town along the beach road towards Ylang Ylang until the last parking spot where there’s a “no motor vehicles beyond” sign. From there you walk east down the beach and find a path that crosses the rocks to a small beach. There you’ll find tide pools and a small creek. You’ll also notice the whole character of the beach changes as it’s untrammelled. From there you can continue intermittently using a path to 2 other beaches, the last and largest and most beautiful is playa grande. There are a few buildings for the preserve that are barely visible and I don’t think they offer much or anything for passers by. I just enjoyed the beautiful beach and preserved foliage. It’s very beautiful and much different from the beaches with roads along them. Highly recommend for an early morning walk and wildlife watch. It gets quite hot to walk during the day, so beware.
