No Pura Vida vibe at Espadilla beach with Pedro
We have visited Manuel Antonio a few times and have some great experiences but be aware of the many hustlers who will try to sell you things and who offer beach service with umbrellas and chairs. We posted up in front of the main restaurants at the public beach, and got chairs, boogie boards and a canopy- we ended up ordering some bar food (calamari, nachos for our kids) and then some milk shakes a total of 6 single shot drinks over the course of the day and were hit with a bill for $310 USD! A total scam!!! Watch out for Pedro running out of Souvenir Lexy. 🤬😫 The beach is pretty laid back and easy for kiddos to play in the water and boogie board but bring your own drinks and go directly into the restaurants versus relying on beach service. Overall we had a great day but we’re left with a VERY sour taste in our mouth about the scammers and the lack of Pura Vida vibe in Manuel Antonio.

    Very Nice Beach
The beach is quiet and secluded, a stone's throw away from the Manuel Antonio Park. We went there when we realized that tickets to MA needed to be booked ahead of time and we were already geared up for the beach. We had a great time at Playa Espadilla Norte and spent a nice day there. If you can, bring your own chairs and blankets. Also, this is not a beach for swimming as much as it was for wading because of the strong rip currents and the undertow. However, the nature is right there, all around, and it was a beautiful beach. Watch out for the many parking attendants. There is so much shady business going on. We smartly avoided paying and then tipped the guy who was 'watching' the car a few colon and left.

    Beautiful beach, tourist trap
Beautiful beach , but too many vendors. You cannot sit down and relax peacefully without someone trying to sell you something. My little girl felt very uncomfortable at some points with strangers talking in her face and trying to touch her hair.

    Glen Castro’s surfing school!
We only spent 1/2 day at this beach. But we had the pleasure to rent our boards and chairs from Glen and Angelina Castro. This couple made our time at the beach great. We rented 4 chairs and shade for $20 with unlimited use of their buggy boards and we rented a surf board for $10. I thought it was great value. Perfect spot at the beach. The both of them very genuine and attentive people. Glen teaches lessons and I saw one of his classes and his student had a hard time getting up, but Glen gave him some tips and the person started getting up immediately. He looked like a great teacher.

We were too scammed into a parking fee. They locals were very aggressive. The beach was overly crowded. Huge jelly fish everywhere. After my daughter was caught in one, I when to the guys who sold us our parking spot and they laughed and told us to pee on it. They said the jelly fish are everywhere here. Keep wondering why no one else has warned us about this.

We were staying at the Gaia Hotel and Reserve who run a shuttle down to the beach so we decided to leave our rental car behind.
I had read about all the scams and pressure selling on the beach, but we were dropped by the big sign giving advice on riptides and met Peluca. The man is an absolute gentleman and we were given beds and a parasol for $10 USD. He continued to check on us, have chats and go and get us a bucket of beers.
There are people walking around trying to earn a living but none of them were rude or aggressive when politely refused.
The water can be rough for children and those not confident in the water but from our perspective, we had a great time. We also saw a sloth in a tree near the car park and a toucan.

Beware of parking scams and aggressive locals! Locals make you pay ‘security fee’ for parking your on the beach where it is fee. They charge 12000 colon. If you don’t pay they damage your can and they get aggressive. I was hit by a stone on the head. They are so called selling tourist trips and help you with parking the car. All the tourist selling locals at that beach are in on it. Please do yourself a favour and don’t go here. This is definitely not Pura Vida!

The beach was very nice and relaxed if you choose the right spot. We arrived around 1030 and walked down a ways, to get to a less crowded area. We did not rent chairs/umbrellas. Just found a spot in the shade and spread a blanket out. The surf was a bit rough for my 6 & 9 yo since one had an infection and we couldn’t risk him getting his head in. My husband swam and had a good time. The kids were content playing with the drift wood, sticks, coconuts etc that they found on the beach. Plenty of vendors came by to offer cold coconuts, snacks, cigars, jewelry, but no one was pushy and a simple no gracias worked fine. We brought water and sandwiches and stayed till around 1 when tide was getting higher. Enjoyed watching the surfers.

Some areas were more crowded with people, vendors music. So there was that atmosphere too if you wanted it.
