From our well informed tour guide to coffee in the cafe afterward we appreciated Costa Rican support of their arts and cultural heritage.

Just a jewel in downtown San José, Costa Rica. History, fine arts, nice dinning . Easy to get there.

The theatre is quite elegant, but probably not worth $10. There is really just a nice stairway and one impressive room to see. You can look in at the stage and perhaps see a rehearsal. It would obviously be more interesting to see an actual...More

The building was nice and interesting to visit, but there was not much information. Ticket was bit expensive considering all ( 10$ per person). All together I would recommend visiting this old theatre.

We took a tour through the theater. Worth it because it’s beautiful and has rich history. Nothing incredibly shocking, which is why the tour helps (like learning that the building is made from all sorts of extinct granite that is impossible to find anywhere anymore,...More

What an amazing building. The exterior is great but hides an amazing interior. It cost $10 each to enter which initially I thought was steep but then that included a guided tour which was well worth it. Built in 1897 by two Costa Rican architects...More

They're closed for over a week since I've been here. Nothing on the schedule; nothing advertised. The kiosk in front of the building in the plaza is advertising the schedule from 2018 and this is 2019.

I had a guided tour which I enjoyed, it was interesting and the guide presented details about the history of the theatre, the construction and interior. I think it was one of the nicest things I did in my short stay in San Jose.

So, the coffee planters wanted some high class entertainment and got the government (workers) to pay for it. However it came about, this is a beautiful building, a European style opera house that seems almost perfectly sized. Big enough to be grand, but small enough...More
