The museum is dedicated to the cultural history of Costa Rica and I am sure does a wonderful job for local residents. As visitors, we should have listened to the staff at the hotel when they told us it really wasn't for tourists. If you speak Spanish, it might be more interesting. The Butterfly Garden was lovely, but there are... More

This former Spanish fort/prison still maintains the colonial feel to it by having the exhibits spread around the building with a central garden area in the middle. There is a little confusion as to the flow form exhibit to exhibit but they each, in turn are wonderful and have bilingual signs given the history of each. Also to be noted,... More

We visited this museum in hopes of getting an overview of Costa Rica. The building itself is interesting, and there are photo galleries off on one side that provide the history of the building and its role in Costa Rica history. This segment is definitely a must see for history buffs. Otherwise... You enter the museum through a butterfly garden.... More

I loved this museum. It offers everything from the history of the stone spheres, to the pre-columbian evolution, to the influence of European culture all through artifacts, photographs and and more. It is a wonderful time machine into Costa Rican history. I truly enjoyed this museum.

This museum isn't terribly large but the view is perfect! There are also some pretty butterflies, cool historial information complete with historic pictures and castle tower, and a rooftop garden space.

We had only one afternoon in San Jose and were staying in the Forum area (longer cab ride from downtown). We really debated whether to go to the National Museum or to the Precolumbian Gold Museum (something so attractive about gold!). The National Museum was recommended by our concierge and we are glad we made the choice. This museum had... More

This was our first stop on our trip to Costa Rica, and what a great place to begin! There is a wide variety of exhibits here. You enter through a butterfly garden and pass on to exhibits featuring cultural and historical artifacts as well as examples of pre-Columbian gold ornaments and several preserved rooms of the commander's quarters. The museum... More

This is a small but wonderful museum. It houses some fabulous pre-Columbian artifacts including pottery, stone sculptures, gold and jade. It is in the old Bellavista Fortress. Its tower and walls are riddled with bullet holes from the civil war of 1948. You enter through a butterfly garden with beautiful foliage but very few butterflies.
