Stopped by as it was fairly close to my hotel and quite enjoyed wandering through the stalls - a fairly small market, but interesting nonetheless. Had some great coffee and a seafood rice dish which I quite enjoyed. Found the staff helpful and friendly.

Great old fashion market with a charm. We had lunch at a local soda in the market and had the most beautiful seafood soup surrounded by locals and much cheaper than other places in the country. Little shops old style but great to visit.

This is a traditional market working since 1880. Is a big place, with entrance in the 4 corners of the block. You can find butchers, fishmongers, groceries, flowers, and tiny stores all around. Is an interesting place to see. You can buy souvernirs. No entrance...More

A great way to gauge the food and shopping of San Jose, lots of fresh meat and fish shops, local vegetable and fruit stalls and bustling with locals shopping for fresh produce. There's a lot of popular little eating joints in the market and definitely...More

Area was much like Times Square. Lots of fast-paced selling, dark and dank bars. Dirty city feel... Don't wander outside of selling area or clutch your purse. Police around but they look to be 12 years old and not well informed about locations and surroundings....More

We visited this market while walking around in downtown San Jose, although much of downtown San Jose feels like a big market because people have their stalls everywhere on the streets. The market was ok but nothing too special. It has a lot of souvenirs...More

A bustling place to visit, the Mercado Central is full of buyers and sellers. It's focus is very much for locals, with few show cases of local art and souvenirs. Worth a visit if you're in the city.

Because this is a very popular spot it is easier to take a bus or cab rather than find a spot to park. Make sure to take your time and be prepared to haggle with the dealers to get a better price. Pura Vida!
