We booked a tour with Alaskan Food Tours for our upcoming vacation in May. This week we received an email cancelling the tour. The email said that they will not be operating the business in 2017.

We stopped by in Juneau and took tour of Harbor; after cruise boats left. It was a true education how there is heat and cold smoking of the salmon. They provided plenty of samples and you could see them cutting up the seafood thru the clear glass panels; truly amazing learning experience for us and kids to see where fresh seafood is processed

My wife and I joined a group of mostly locals on this tour during a cruise stop and were very glad we did. The hosts did a great job of introducing us to Juneau's culture, history, and native traditions through the medium of food. First, the food. You get to try five different salmon appetizers at Taku, lobster bisque at the world famous Tracy's King Crab Shack, an amazing fish taco at Deckhand Dave's, decadent fresh fudge at Alaskan Fudge Company, Ice Cream at Coppa (we loved the rhubarb), coffee at Heritage, and a very filling adobo burrito at Twilight Cafe in the SLAM. One other stop is Glacier Salt Cave & Spa, where you learn the benefits of glacial salt. Next, the history. The hosts cover how Juneau has grown through the salmon industry, the Christmas traditions at the governor's mansion, Juneau's unique links to Seattle and Starbucks, and many other stories that really give you a good historical overview delivered in a fun style. My personal favorite aspect was that one of the two guides is Tlingit. One thing that was difficult as an outsider was finding any tours or information on the Alaskan native peoples. Lucy does a great job of letting you know how important her traditions are to her while also tying those traditions to Juneau and back to the foods you get to sample. Great tour, so glad we went on it. I highly recommend this, you will leave with a mind full of new knowledge and a belly full of food!

Hi brewcity77, Thank you so much for taking the time to write this fantastic review of our food tour. Both Karen and I enjoyed visiting with you and your wife while you stopped in Juneau while on a cruise of southeast Alaska. I’m glad you got to create some wonderful food memories while you were here and enjoyed learning about my Tlingit culture and the history of Juneau. It’s fun to be able to share my personal knowledge with people who visit my hometown. Sincerely, Lucy

My husband and I took this tour while our cruiseship was in port for the day. I've been on one other food tour in NYC and loved it, so I was eager to try another one during our trip to Alaska. The owners, Karen and Lucy are incredibly kind and friendly. You can tell they are passionate about promoting their city, and the local businesses, as well as educating visitors about the local culture and Tlingit history. We learned about the local fishing industry and got to see a real slime line in action. There are several cultural and history stops along the way. There is even a chauffeured ride by the governor's mansion. As for the food...we tried 5 different kinds of smoked salmon, King crab bisque, crab cakes, fudge, ice cream, coffee, a salmon taco, a giant adobo burrito, dried seaweed and halibut all from local shops. Everything was Delicious! We did not leave hungry! This tour is very well done. You are even provided with a headset so you can hear the tour guides at all times. If you are visiting Juneau or are a resident of the area I highly recommend this tour.

Thanks for joining us on an Alaskan Food Tours walking culinary adventure! We are so glad you enjoyed your tour and feel so lucky to have had an opportunity to share with you our passion about Juneau, the local businesses, and the history and culture that makes our community so rich. I’m glad we had a chance to take you to some of our favorite eateries, and were able to share with you some of the local only specialties like the adobo burrito. We really take pride in being able to offer traditional Alaskan Native foods like the dried seaweed and dried halibut from Kake, Alaska, while sharing Tlingit history and culture. I’m glad that you found the headset’s helpful in hearing all that was being offered. If you come back to Juneau, look us up and find out what is new!
