School Trip to Saxman Native Village
This place is a must see when visiting Ketchikan! I went to accompany my granddaughter who lives here and was on a school trip. The show was so well done, the park is great to walk around to view the totem poles, and the shop where the craftspeople make the poles is very interesting and moving. I highly recommend this venue. Also, shop here as their sales items are theirs and not commercial as in town.

    Introduction to Native Alaska culture
I came here on an excursion from my cruise ship. First we entered the Ceremonial Hall and saw a cultural performance. Then we had a talk on some of the totem poles and visited the carving shed where one of the carvers spoke to us. Finally we had some free time to wander around the village to see the various totem poles and visit the gift shop. HINT: I downloaded a village map from their website so I could read the descriptions of the totem poles.

NOT WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION
Came here in a tour offered in front of ship. Total rip, better to just hire a taxi and have him take you down the road and make a few stops and see it all. Just a bunch of totem poles with very little Explanation. Carvers seem to be inside hanging out and very unassailable.

    Great Learning Experience
This was a fun excursion to learn about the native culture and the totems. Our guide was great, the dancing and costumes were beautiful. I loved the explanation of how the totems were constructed. Bonus- there was an orca whale playing in the bay!

    so-so experience
We had about a 10-minute bus ride from the port to the village. It was light rain, so bring your umbrellas. We packed into a large clan house with plenty of seating and watched a native dance show. It seemed to be a lack of enthusiasm by the dancers, as they seemed to be just mostly kids and a few adults doing their duty to uninterested tourists. Performance was less than spectacular. The presentation at the totems was much more interesting, with the history of each - that lasted about 1/2 hour. Then we proceeded to woodworking building where they were carving totems and other objects - the demonstrations were interesting and enjoyable watching the senior carver with a lot of skills. Overall, I thought it was overpriced and not that genuine, but ok to spend a few hours off the ship.

Joe and Lee at sax man village
Joe and Lee are amazing!! Engaging, knowledge and Joe kept me transfixed when telling his history and the history of the sax man village. I had goose bumps when Joe spoke about the wolves. Fiid was SO good. Seriously. Loved it all. Definitely a must when in Ketchikan.

We enjoyed this experience very much.
From the explanation of the culture, dancing and storytelling of the totems , you can see that these people were passionate about their heritage and willing to share.

What a disappointment! No natives only tourists some Totem Poles but no explanation It really was not worth the trip as there was nothing there. There was a large hut but this was closed and only accessible to large tour groups.

Perhaps we were expecting too much from this visit to a Native Village? The entire tour was mediocre, from the dancing and singing in the meeting hall to the wood carvers. Their skill was clearly exceptional, however, the talking was too long and drawn out. The totem park was the most fascinating aspect of the visit. The various types were described and pointed out, and their original use as an "address" was explained. This was the only highlight of the tour. There was a gift shop to visit at the end of the tour.

We visited Saxman as part of our tour and were totally impressed at the beauty of the totems and the history behind them. I personally thought it was the best part of the tour.
