This is a nicely restored mining camp, although the mine itself is not restored. There's a paved level walking path that provides mostly external views of bunkhouses, cookhouse, and assay office. There are interpretative signs, as well as a small visitor center. There's also hiking...More

When we were there, the park had already closed its closest parking lot to the mine because of the end of the season. The road up to Hatcher Pass is paved, but you have to walk part of the way to the mine, once the...More

I enjoyed going through this place, walking as far as we could go! I got tired but it was a good tired! I learned a lot by going through the buildings that were open, the place was maintained and the walkways were open.

This is a very interesting abandoned gold mine nestled in beautiful Hatcher's Pass. The drive going into Independence Mine is breathtaking as you are surrounded by Alaska in all her glory. It's especially beautiful if you go mid to late September when all the flora...More

It is a nice place to spent some time and to walk through this historical site. We only spent 1 hour in the evening but felt we needed more to explore the site in depth.

I didn't really know what to expect when we arrived at the town. There's a visitor's center inside the Mine Manager's house but it's not open as long as the park so if you want to go inside, make sure to check the hours -...More

This was a nice place to enjoy the scenery and take a long walk to explore the old gold mining area. The historic structures are labeled with interesting facts, and the river is there to pan for gold if you bring along your pans.

This place is really neat. Beautiful location. we parked below and walked up to avoid the parking charge. It is a good walk uphill, so only if you are good with that. Lot's of old crumbling buildings and mining equipment. Good info on the history...More

Very interesting place to visit. Lots to read that is incredibly informative about the mine, the people, their way of life and history of the time period the mine operated. A lot of walking but enjoyable.

Roughly 25-30 miles. Good paved roads all the way. Beautiful views along the way. If needed, when you get to parking area, follow signs to handicapped unloading area. Eliminates a little uphill walking.
