- 3RumHoi An, Vietnam172 contributionsÂmzingCat Cat village is the oldest village in the Northwest region located right at the foot of the majestic Hoang Lien Son mountain range. The village belongs to San Sa Ho commune, Sapa district, Lao Cai province. Cat Cat village is located 1500 to 1800 meters above sea level, so the climate is cool all year round. This place is the home of the H'Mong ethnic people. Cat Cat village is located very close to Sapa town at a distance of 3 km. It is no coincidence that Cat Cat village is considered the most beautiful ancient village in the Northwest. When you come here, you will witness the simple, rustic wooden roofs located along the clear streams covered by the green of the mountains and forests or discover firsthand the culture of the H'Mong ethnic group through daily living activities.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 September 2023
- Lim S2 contributionsCat cat villageThe entry fee is on the high side. After entering the village, a long row of souvenir shops greet visitors. Entry fee is payable to visit the tree house. The waterfall area is fine. Folk dance performance is interesting. Advisable to take taxi back to town.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 October 2023
- Bobbi SLido Beach, New York5,376 contributionsNot As Touristy As People SayEverything we read said that Cat Cat Village is very touristy, not authentic, crowded & not worth going to. We say: none of the above is true & we are so glad that we went! If you imagine that his created village is more than just that then you, too, will enjoy it. Yes, you have to first walk through a long line of small scale vendors who sell everything from buffalo jerky (it was quite good!), to silver jewelry, woven bags, belts, blankets, food, drinks, you name it. Once in the valley area, you will see TONS of people, mostly Vietnamese tourists who rent traditional clothes to have their pictures taken alongside one of the waterfalls, on horses, next to one of the many water wheels, near the river...it's all so colorful. We happened to walk into one of the small theaters in time to see dancers practicing their routines as their leader beat out the rhythms & perfected their movements. Suddenly, a local vendor came in with baskets of greens & all the dancers stopped their practice so that they could buy some herbs & veggies for their families. We saw beautiful waterfalls, huge birdhouses, gardens of flowers & fruits trees, people coming & going everywhere, taking in all of the sights. We enjoyed the rural feeling, the stone stairways, trees hugging the hillside, the slow-moving river, & we, too, took one of the best pictures here. A good memory.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 November 2023
- JulieP552014Victoria Capital Regional District, Canada19 contributionsWorth the visit. The village is fixed up for tourists with lots of shops selling stuff, but we still had fun. Lots of guests rent ethnic costumes to wear during their visit, which made it even more fun. A beautiful little valley with stream and small waterfalls.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 December 2023
- Samantha TSingapore, Singapore51 contributionsPleasant visitWe were a little hesitant to visit Cat Cat village due to the not so pleasant reviews. However, we had a pleasant time there. There are various viewpoints which offer nice views of the river terraces and mountains. The waterfall in the middle of the village is scenic. Although this is a so called 'manufactured' village, it is still scenic and a pleasant place to visit. Do note however that there are lots of steps and you will pass by many shops selling similar stuff at the beginning. We walked there from Sapa town which is about 2km away. The views along the way are breathtakingly beautiful. However the roads are steep and you have to share paths with the motorbikes/cars. There are motorbike taxis if you are too tired to walk back.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 December 2023
- JasminetckShah Alam, Malaysia429 contributionsEnchanting Cultural RetreatCat Cat Village in Sapa is a charming destination known for its ethnic Hmong culture and scenic landscapes. Visitors often appreciate the traditional handicrafts, cultural performances, and trekking opportunities. The terraced rice fields and cascading waterfalls add to the picturesque setting. Keep in mind that it can get crowded, but the unique cultural experience and stunning views make it a worthwhile visit.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 24 December 2023
- ZeeSingapore, Singapore723 contributionsOne way journeyIf not for the ending area where there's traditional performance and the waterful, probaby would have rated as 1 star. Find it too commercialised. At the entrance after paying for the tickets, you will pass by a long stetch of shops and some photospots. For some photospot, it seems like you will have to pay a small sum, or buy a little stuff or drinks from the shop before you could take the photo. You will get a better deal if you skip buying your stuff from the earlier stall, if not please do some bargaining. Note: this is a one way route. Right from the entrance to the ending where you need to get transport back by taxi, or by your tour coach. We had ask a staff at the shop who told us the other way. Even though we did use google translate to asked. Which was actually for scooter ride out only. Look out for sign "Come back", as a exit sign. Once you follow the "Come back" sign, hiking a flight of steep steps up then either you walk a while to get to the taxi area or could just ride the electric car. Cant remember how much we paid for. There's free washroom available when you see the village. This place might be tricky for who people who have knees problem. As there's alot of stairs.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 December 2023
- Michael TSingapore, Singapore2,948 contributionsBeware of steps, lots of steps. We visited Cat Cat Village on a wet day, after touring Fansipan Mountain. What we didn't expect was that Cat Cat Village is actually a valley at the foot of the mountains. From the car park area we walked down a slope, then lots of stone steps to get down to the valley. My wife and I took a slow walk down hill. We were rewarded with picturesque views all round, gentle small waterfalls and a cool December afternoon. There are shops that rent colourful ethnic costumes to tourists, which made for a great photoshoot as a souvenir for your visit. It is a touristic place and I can imagine the crowd if it's the high peak season. We took a walk around the valley, to the bridge of the far waterfall and then walked back to the car park. The walking back was a tough one as we had to walk up slope! Overall I would rate this place a 3.5, unfortunately I can only give it a 3 or 4 rating here. We did enjoyed our time exploring Cat Cat Village.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 January 2024
- Linz HManchester, United Kingdom12 contributionsA traditional village tourist attractionHaving read the reviews, we were wary whether to go to Cat Cat Village or give it a miss. I think what people are forgetting is that yes, there are people peddling their wares, but what do you expect from a touristic area ... And yes, there is an entry fee, like lots of places the world over. If you can get your head beyond that, then it's a pleasant day out. They were doing some construction work at the bottom near the waterfalls, and even that didn't detract from the visit. It is a steep hike down many steps to the waterfall and a killer coming back up, in my opinion. You will be mithered if you want to opt for a motorbike transfer back up to the top, rather than having a cardiac, but we politely declined every time (only because l wanted to prove to myself I am fitter than what I think).Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 January 2024
- Merlin AlejoKuala Lumpur, Malaysia68 contributionsWalktrip market with beautiful sceneryThe main attraction was the waterfall and the bridge area. Yes it was beautiful but Cat Cat Village is more to market than the village itself. You can’t really see and feel the culture because it is just a walk trip market. Nevertheless, it has beautiful scenery and products here are very good quality and handmade.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 January 2024

Visited yesterday and have to say it was the highlight of our trip to Sa Pa - if not the best thing we have done since arriving in Vietnam some 12 days ago. Astoundingly beautiful scenery. A quite easy and gentle walk downhill from Sa Pa town. Once in Cat Cat Village itself there are loads of craft stalls, small cafe/bars etc., the centre of the village with its waterfalls and terraces is breathtaking. There is even a local show put on with dancers and musicians staged right in front of the main waterfalls. Everywhere you look there is another photo opportunity. Although the walk down is ok I must say that for me personally the walk back up would have been challenging to say the least ! So I bottled it and got a motorbike ride back up for 100,000 VD - about £3- well worth it.

100,000 VND admission fee so you can walk for hours through souvenir stands - all selling exactly the same junk and dried nuts. I’m not even certain the stuff is locally made. No opportunity to leave the tour either - you’ll know you’re at the end when the drivers start harassing you to ride their motorbike. The river is beautiful, but is ruined by attempts to make it more touristy - really tacky photo backdrops and fake flowers and whatnot. Not worth the time or effort.

There are couple of nice spots here, and probably the nicest is to walk up the river that runs towards the lowest waterfall - it’s a bit out of the area and reqires some careful steps in the beginning, so it’s peaceful and you can get a little taste of jungle.
The village itself is not nearly as ”original” or ”tribal” as advertised. Most waterfalls are artificial. Lobg walk to the village is stuffed with booths selling expensive souvenirs. Even though it’s mostly nice area, it’s a tourist trap, like whole of Sa Pa.

This place is a tourist trap. To get to this place, you have to go down a long narrow street full of street vendors and dogs. Be prepared to get exhausted to say "No" and refuse people that try to sell you stuff and stop you. The village itself is not an authentic village, it's a fake one, made for tourists, and it's full with tourists only dressed up in traditional clothes that came there to take photos. Go on a hike in the rice fields instead, this place is a tourist trap and the few hours it takes to get there and see it are just not worth it.

Fantastic place! Stunning views! Loved it here on a clear afternoon in winter. Lots of steps and a beautiful, happy cultural performance at the waterfall. You can buy some beautiful local handicraft we didn’t see in other places. We have the free cultural performance a tip in the box but didn’t see other tourists do this. Maybe they didn’t see the box. Performers looked so happy and proud. Thank you for opening your beautiful village to us.

Unless you are interested in shopping or taking pictures in traditional clothing, its not really worth the entrance fee (150k p.P.). The village could be nice, but seems to suffer from overtourism. It was overcrowded (sunday) and you couldn't really enjoy it due to the amount of people, who all blocked paths to take pictures of themselves. It's just a big tourist town with people putting on a show to try and entertain. Left me feeling a bit sentimental about what this village may have been before.

Don’t go on a tour -we got a taxi that dropped us at the entry and picked us up at the end. It cost. $7 each way. You then walk down a path after paying a cheap entry fee and pass many many stores of the cat cat village people. The scenery is beautiful as is the bottom of the valley. Can’t say I enjoyed walking up the mountain track but lucky the taxi was waiting half way up. It was fantastic and you don’t need a tour todo it.

The scenery there is breathtaking. Impressive! At first we were wondering should we pay for the entrance fees as we probably will explore the culture by walking around the nearby area. We had made the right decision, is worth of value.

We did not enjoy our "trek" to CatCat Village. We walked for about 20 minutes on the side of a very congested road with motorbikes and cars passing inches from us to arrive at CatCat Village. I still cannot believe that was the "trek" part. There is a small admission fee to enter the village. At the village there are many many stalls selling souvenirs and lots of cheap stuff from China. It was packed with Vietnamese tourists who rented costumes to wear and took photos of themselves at all the "selfie spots".
Eventually we did see a pretty water fall and some people demonstrating local crafts, but it felt very artificial and touristy. Not at all what we had imagined when we heard about trekking to a local village to see the lifestyle of the tribal people of the hill country. I agree with jasperv772, it is ok, but there are real treks to small villages that are amazing.

Is there a hand rail on the steps down to Cat Cat village? Is it doable for a 67 year old with arthritic knees if we take our time? I understand that we can hire a motorbike to go up the hill when exiting? I have read that it is very touristy, but we would like to visit anyway.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The trip to Cat Cat Village from nearby town is fulls with construction as of early 2024. The best way is to use bike. And within the Cat Cat Village itself, it has a lot of stairs. Consider preparing for tools to help you walk with ease
Written 18 July 2024
What are the stairs down like? How many stairs/how many flights from the entrance at the top, through the village to the bottom? Could a 75 year old with slight knee problems walk all the way down for example?
Written 25 May 2023
Please chose the entrance at the end of asphalt road. First entrance is at least hundred meters elevation higher than second one, close to bigger parking 🅿️ place should be easier. You will avoid some problems. There are many taxi 🚕 as well. Otherwise this village was for me rather commercial. If you would like to see real villages pls visit Muong Hoa valley with rice paddies and villages. Great views, nice walk and no traffic

May I know how's the weather and is the hike/trek suitable for elderly in their 60s?

Hi there,
Cat-cat village is definitely an easy-medium track especially for elders. On November, I believe it will be colder but bearable considering the winter is coming. Just make sure, you are equip with suitable clothes and you are good to go!

Written 27 April 2019
Due to the language barrier, you need to have a good guide. Best to book it with your hotel or your travel agents. Cat Village is quite near my hotel.

Can we walk on our own from Sapa Centre Hotel to Cat Cat Village or do we need a guide? I read that it is only 3km away.
Written 8 January 2019
You can walk without a guide. However when you reach the village you will pay an entrance fee. Be prepared. Wide brimmed hat , walking shoes/boots, water.
You are 1600 m above see level heading down a steep path to the village.
The village is great to see and beautiful waterfalls.
You then walk through the village and back up a steep path to the town.
Or organize a vehicle to meet you at the bottom car park to drive you back up the mountain.
Then head for a chilled beer , you’ve earned it
