Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A very good local market, the fruit and vegetables and the wet meat sections were both really good. No problems with us walking through taking photos. Well worth a look, not far from the bus park or the top end of the lake.

If you’re looking for a serious bargain on fabrics, jewelry and clothes this is where to do it. There are a ton of stalls with little old ladies but do not be disillusioned, these ladies are ruthless. Haggle, and don’t let yourself be swayed. We haggled down from 100,000 vnd to 15,000!

We traveled hours outside of Hanoi to see this city which is filled with people from all over the world. It’s a popular destination for hikers and wine lovers. Those who live there seem poor but happy. There
are a lot of small hotels and places for massages, many religious tours.
Be careful who you make eye contact with because they will want to sell you something

Went here for lunch but saw something that is heartbreaking. They sell DOG meat in the market. I understand dogs, pig, chicken are also animal and i myself can't turn into a vegan but looking at the dog died there, it's just very heart aching for me. The market in the square has nothing special. Food vendors with the scary HELLLO but still we tried their bun cha. It tastes 3/5. The 1 star is for the bo bia motor stall at the end of market sold by a lady. The bobia only cost vnd5000 and is very nice!! That's all. RIP my doggie

I feel really sad today when I visited the New Sapa Market today, which is about a kilometer, about 25k taxi ride from the Sapa church/city center. In 2009, when I first visited Sapa, the old market was filled with many minorities selling their goods in the town square across from the church. When tourists purchase their goods, they actually support the minorities and not the middle man, which take a huge percentage of the minorities' ware. The Vietnamese government's excuse is to "modernize" the market but the hidden agenda is really to capitalize on more of the ethic labor. The new market is just like any other market in Vietnam. The main different they conveniently forget to tell you is that you do not see a single ethnic minority selling at the new market. It is predominantly all local Vietnamese. The minorities must sell out in the pavement around the church and along the streets like second class citizens, because in the eyes of the law, they do not have papers and any legal status. I saw a red Dao woman selling her things straight outside of a local store selling the same stuff at a higher price. The govt tells you to NOT buy from the locals in the street, to NOT book any tour straight from the local minorities. Don't believe that bull$h!t. I bought a scarf from a Hmong vendor today, at 70k, a hat at 70k--I do this because I know my money go straight to them and not anyone else. Please do support the ethnic minorities and don't believe what the govt tell you, since they do not care for the ethic people. If you dare, rent a motorbike yourself, and just pay the entrance fee to visit the villagers yourself. Don't worry, you won't get lost--in every direction, there is a village with homestay option. Overnight homestay costs only 70-80k ($3-4 dollars) if you just rent a motorbike ($4-5 dollars) and explore south of Sapa to the village and negotiate with the villagers for a room in English. So should you visit the New Market? They have menus in set price (about 25-30k for soup and rice dishes), but if you ever been to Ben Thanh or other markets in Vietnam, then you shouldn't. Unless you want to buy meat or fruits. I got rambutans and apples at 35k and 8k for half a kilo, respectively. Go to the Bac Ha market for a more authentic experience.

Downstairs is a waste of time unless you love cheap garbage from China. Upstairs in the back is the ethnic market. Most of the women there moved from the old market and have lots of experience. Their selection is great and the quality is high. Make sure you buy something that is handmade as there is some machine made stuff there. They all have sewing machines so if you want something custom made pick out the material and have them make something.

Outside there is a selection of some local handmade baskets, food, etc. At the back of the market is cooked food (inexpensive) and a good selection of fruits/vegetables/meat just out the back door.

The market is located next to the bus station and is about 1 KM from the center of the town. Go past the lake and you'll spot it.

We almost missed this. Walking into the market we saw all the same old same old stuff. We were getting ready to leave and my friend noticed some pieces hanging over the upstairs railing. And sure enough - there were at least 30 vendors all selling their tribal pieces. Gorgeous! They are pretty aggressive so brace yourself! But the ladies are very sweet, gregarious, fun loving and good natured. I bought quite a lot of pieces and am very happy!

We walked 20 minutes to the Sa Pa market. Masses of stalls selling traditional costumes and embroidered items. Very few shoppers and many women in traditional dress, many working sewing machines. A 100 m walk down one of the streets in the town is more interesting.

The new market is modern market and offers you the normal things what you can find in normal city. I still remember how I love the true Sapa market 5 years ago.
