Excellent surface, lots of steps. Lovely bush, saw quite a bit of birdlife, especially titipounamu (rifleman). Part of it is a boardwalk with beautiful views of the mountain if the day is fine. The waterfall itself is very picturesque. Took just over an hour return.

Very attractive short walk (1 h 30 mins inc return) though bush and alpine bog areas and culminating at a small waterfall. Of special interest is the boardwalk across the bog and pond area. Sit quietly at the rest point and listen to the frogs...More

Have done this walk multiple times and is great. A lot of stairs towards the waterfall and a lovely board walk with great Mount Ruapehu views.

A pleasant walk up through pretty woodland, then onto a boardwalk across heathland, which gave spectacular views of Mount Ruapehu. Well worth the walk just for that. The waterfall, although falling 39 meters, wasn’t so dramatic but still worth seeing.

This is a great walk to do and from the board walk you get beautiful views of Mount Ruapehu on a clear day. The reflections in the ponds are just beautiful. I have done this twice now, once down to the waterfall and once just...More

Great family walk - nice 1 hour and 20 minute walk, 1st 20 mins is up hill but not a real challenge, variation in landscape and good in almost any weather. Well maintained path.

My boyfriend and I did this walk on a very cold, cloudy, rainy day (we also briefly got snowed on), therefore we didn't have any views of Ruapehu, but would still give this walk 10/10 purely for the swampy tussock area and the beautiful waterfall...More

The track to the falls is now a pleasant walk, with the DOCS track improvements over the last 40 years. Beyond the falls to the huts is trickier. The view of the mountain from the board walk is, as always, spectacular ! ... on a...More

The bush walk is up to the usual very high Department of Conservation standards, and it's great to also experience an open boardwalk across a swampy tussock area that has fantastic view to Mt Ruapehu. The track end abruptly at the small river below the...More

Beautiful walk with a lot of steep steps, but the track is excellent and the Waitonga Falls a worthy reward for your 35-minute workout. Highlight for me was coming out of the alpine forest into the open, and a spectacular wetland/swamp traversed by a long...More
