Can you camp on the lake or is it only permitted at the campground? Any info is greatly appreciated!

This is a nice place to fish, granted it's 30 miles from any paved roads and if you have a boat it is for 9.9 HP or lower motors only. Pretty all around and great place to catch fish or crawdads for the kids.

I have always said that I'd rather take a hike than use a vault toilet, but the toilets at Knoll lake were very clean! They were cleaned each morning during our stay, and well stocked with toilet paper. There were also air fresheners in every vault, which really helped minimize odors. The rangers were very friendly and kept the campsites impeccably clean. We were initially hesitant to make the trip to Knoll Lake, given several bad reviews I turned up on google. I can say first-hand that those reviews must be very old, because my family had a great experience! It was well worth the 21 miles of rocky, dirt road to get there, and we will definitely be going back! Oh, and if any fisherman happens to reel in my phone from the bottom of Knoll Lake, I'd be happy to offer a reward! :)

I just camped near the lake with my brother and some friends. It was windy and a bit cold down by the lake itself but the trout were hitting like crazy. As another reviewer had noted, the views from the nearby rim road are magnificent and if you prefer really rustic camping there's lots of great places nearby. Really outstanding!

My wife and I visited this lake summer of 2014. this is one of about 3-4 lakes down FR 300. The lakes all site on the Mogollon Rim, which is the Southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Excellent views can be seen looking south any were near the edge off FR 300. The view goes on for hundreds of miles! The lake gets its name from an island/knoll in the middle of it! During most months you can watch Bald Eagles hunting/diving for trout! I believe there is a nest on the knoll as well. The lake is popular with kayakers and fisherman. Trout fishing is pretty good from the shore and boat. From the 260 exit left (north) at the Woods Canyon Lake turn off. This is paved for the first mile or two then turns to graded dirt road in great condition for 2wd/low clearance passenger vehicles. Just follow FR 300 West to reach Bear Canyon and Knoll Lake. There are signs posted for each lake. Each lake does have camping near its shores and restrooms. Fee camping can be had at Knoll Lake and free camping is available on some of the other nearby forest roads. There is a boat ramp on the North side of Knoll Lake.
