A must
Apr 2021
Its sooo much more than dead wood. First the colors (stripes, swirls and rings) of the wood of the mountains and of the desert. Second the trails are easy ~ third the natural beauty!

Petrified Forest is an absolute Must Visit.

One of America’s best, and a two for one. You get Painted Desert and Petrified Forest for one price. Amazing vistas, lessons in geology, archaeology, and paleontology in one park. Plan a whole day for all the side hikes, or just breeze through in the car, plenty of pullouts for photos. Bring sunscreen and plenty of water.

Spectacular!

This is a great place to buy the the $80 Annual Park Pass. With 4 other National Monuments within 2 hrs of Flagstaff, we saved $100 in fees in 3 days (and skipped a couple of lines.) Not huge hikers, we loved the drive through-ability of Petrified Forest and Painted Desert. The map was super easy to follow with several overviews and a few very short hikes. You can go through at whatever pace you want. I love touristy stuff so got a kick out of the fact that it’s the only National Park that has a section of the original Route 66. BEWARE: We were surprised they closed at 5pm!

Definitely hike the Blue Mesa!
Mar 2021
National Park #4 that we visited on this trip. Another great park to take in. They do have open/close hours so make sure you give yourself enough time to see all that you want to see. There are many trails to choose from We did the Crystal Forest, Puerco Pueblo and the Blue Mesa which was my favorite. The Blue Mesa was like hiking thru the badlands. For the most part it is completely paved but it goes up down and around. But the terrain is so different and beautiful to take in. Being we visited in March the park was pretty empty. Dress in layers as it can get warm hiking.

Lovely park to do in a day.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the Petrified Forest National Park. We did four short trails. We started doing a 1 mile rim walk along the Painted Desert which had wonderful vistas. The Blue Mesa was next and was stunning at 8:30 am. There is a steep section which means an uphill trek on the way out but not so bad this 60 year old couldn’t do. We then did the Crystal Forest which may have been our favorite loop with the beautiful petrified logs. We did the log trail as well. There are several longer hike we did not do as we were on a time limit. Those 4 trails and driving through the park took 3 - 4 hours but you could easily spend several more hours. Dogs are allowed on all trails. Bring water, even at 70 degrees, you dry out. I highly recommend getting there as the park opens. We really enjoyed the lack of crowds and the lighting on the blue Mesa trail is outstanding. The park fee is $25. This park is not open 24 hours like most National parks so check the hours. We stayed in Holbrook the night before which is 20 minutes outside the park at a Best Western which was quite nice.

Very Unique National Park
Mar 2021
We've been to so many national parks, three alone on this particular trip, but this one stood out as very unique. We started down at the Rainbow Forest Museum, which is small with a little gift shop, and walked the short trail behind it. Then we did the driving tour up to the Painted Desert Visitor Center, which was a nice big plaza with the national park store, plus a private store, restrooms and a gas station. The park encompassed so many different environments, from the blue mesas to the painted desert, and it was fascinating to watch the scenery change. It was very cold and windy the day we visited, so we didn't get to walk as many of the trails as we would have liked, but we did really appreciate that most of the park was very drivable.

Go to the Crystal Forest!
Mar 2021 • Family
We came from North to South in this park. We used our National park pass. The painted desert part is brief, not too long. We hiked the Blue Mesa, Crystal Forest, and Giant Logs. Crystal Forest was the best. If you are in the park, make sure you go to either Crystal Forest or Giant Logs.

Petrified Forest N.P. is an eye pleasing journey in history.

So many petrified limbs and stumps and all beautifully colored. I was amazed by the number of specimens and sizes. Note, there is a north and south entrance to the park. The Painted Desert is located here too. The Painted Desert is not very colorful and quite muted.

On our way home to Wisconsin and I told my husband this National forest was a great side stop for a few hours. I have been there once. Great photo ops. Beautiful scenery. Nice National Park.
