A popular tourist stop, this jail slid 225 feet downhill during a "land slippage" caused by the many mining shafts in the area.

Nice piece of local history

This is a very cool place. Lots of history here (and on the town as a whole). This is a must-see on Jerome. Don't forget to throw in a coin!

Not really an attraction but part of Jerome's history. There are many historical buildings and facts about Jerome all around the town, you just have to look out for them. You should stop by the information booth that is across from the parking lot, right before you enter "downtown" Jerome. You can pick up a free map of the town... More

Take the Ghost City Tour. It was fun, entertaining and informational. You will be impressed. Then have a cold one in this spooky little town.

The sliding jail is in such a precarious position because it looks like the sliding might continue. There was a bunch of caution tape around the area and the hillside below looks unstable. Be careful if you visit. It is definitely a site to see in the area that you done want to miss.

A little hard even with a map. It is "over the hill" almost in a parking lot. But it is worth the search and the story as are most things in Jerome v

It's not worth making a special trip, but if exploring Jerome, Arizona take 10 minutes to visit the Sliding Jail. It's basically a plaque and remnants of a former jail.

Really cool, take the time to check it out when you visit Jermone. Good picture opportunities. Easy access right in town

This jail is a little creepy, and debilitated. Our Ghost adventure guide explained that a man named Louis was burned to death in this jail. The burn marks from the fire are still on the ceiling. Fun to see and ok for the entire family.

Local shop owner told us about the sliding jail just a block from her store or we would have missed it. Walked down the steps to see but no bigger than a large master bedroom. Kinda interesting but that's it. Missed the plaque altogether. :-(

We did the Ghost Walk which was full of amazing Jerome History. Not so many Ghosts which would certainly be angry considering the thousands who died so violently in the town.
