Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

An apartheid museum one should not miss, this small but well kept and very educational attraction gives visitors a glimpse into the checkered and colored history of Durban and KZN. A definite must see, especially for the history buffs and social scientists.

First rate interactive museum and publications and momentos to take away. A painful part of Durban's history even the name means a beautiful place. I like collecting the old postcards from there. One of my main stops when showing around visiting friends. An essential part of my socio-political tour of my home town.

We had a guide; but, the place has everything well-laid out. Do your homework on apartheid and watch 1959's secretly-filmed "Come Back, Africa" for a history lesson. Very moving and hard to handle in one sitting. But, it showed in reality what this museum depicts with dioramas, pictures, letters....

Simple, engaging yet fun look at South African History that will appeal to all ages! I really enjoyed myself here. It was awesome that I never felt that stereotypical, maudlin, boring-old-people vibe that one thinks that a museum is!

The permanent exhibit added little to what you can find about apartheid South Africa in more comprehensive museums. The AIDS exhibit, which appeared to be temporary (but that wasn't clear) said something important about post-apartheid SA. The folly of the government in delay of treatment of AIDS was not overlooked at all. The exhibit emphasized the possibility of long life despite AIDS, and at least some docents were themselves is treatment.

I was surprised to find a whole room taken up by HIV education. One member of staff not very helpful and unable to explain the HIV exhibit. Another member of staff found asleep in a lecture room, she was very indignant at being disturbed! From all the museums visited Durban appears to playing up Apartheid and is not paying any attention to its colonial roots.

This museum (just a 10 min walk from the main shopping street) gives very good and detailed insight into some aspects of the Apartheid and how simple laws were used to divide the population in South Africa.
It is not very big, so even if you are a history buff and try to read it all one hour will be more than enough, alas even if they tried to make the exhibition a bit more lively it is very heavy on text. If you are close by a short visit is no wasted time at all.

Nostalgic for those who grew up in this era under that regime', but interesting non the less for those who did not have to live through it. To forgive we must not forget and experience it on walls such as these in places like this.

This is the place where work permits were obtained is you are looking for work in Durban during the apartheid period, sadly this was applying to Black only, the old generation becomes emotional when they visit this museum. it used to be very crowded with people looking for work permits and find work, potential employers used to come to this place to recruit workers.

Its a small musuem but offers great history about urban history of the city. I also enjoyed synergy of the HIV/AIDS part .Once again if you familiar with KZN(Durban) history (apartheied and post apartheid)you will appreciate this synergy . As a South African , i would recommend this musuem. It shares light were we come from as a South African nation.
