I am writing this in Feb 2017, I did a lot of research for this trip up the Sani Pass and across Lesotho and it turned out all that I read was out of date, so I hope this will help people planning in 2017/2018. Preparation, a 4x4 is a must, you need documents with the car to say it... More

We - a group of four friends - drove up Sani Pass recently to enjoy the fantastically scenic views of the Natal Drakensburg. The driver was an experienced off road/ 4x4 driver who had no issue driving up and down the pass in her Toyota Landcruiser as the road had been recently maintained/graded. The views were magnificent, both along the... More

The locals introduce most four wheel driving experiences to tourists in Africa as experiencing the 'African massage' due to the bumpiness of the ride and its effect on the seated passenger. The Sani Pass is no exception to this and is probably one of the best 'African massages' around. However the 'massage' is well worth the spectacular and very beautiful... More

Went up Sani Pass in August and was fortunate to experience snow. It's a scenic drive up the pass with a 4x4. It is a tourist Hotspot and a must when in the area.

This is for the real backpackers... We started hitchhiked from Underberg and found only great people all the way to the top! It's such an amazing mountain pass, all the reviews will vouch for this! We just started hiking and Always someone was more than willing to drive us up the road. It was one of the best experiences in... More

4x4 is needed to go up to the highest pub in Africa. The road worms it's way all the way up to the pub and is very slippery in winter. Also riding over a frozen waterfall. Wonderful scenery.

We had a very adventurous attempt at getting up Sani Pass in a 2x4, hence we didn't make it, but sure had some terrifying fun. If you have not done it yet, best you get a 4x4 and do it. I truly believe that once it has been tarred it will lose its charm and they say by 2019 it... More

This is unmissable. Must be done in a 4x4 vehicle but not too bad to self drive. We went up in the dry and came down in a torrential thunderstorm. The top few kilometres are the worst to negotiate and it was "interesting" in the wet. A thrilling drive.
