Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were fortunate to have Deon Romijn assigned as our Thompsons’ guide for a two week tour of South Africa in October 2023. His pride in, and passion for, his country shone through brilliantly throughout our time with him. As a multi-generational South African and a respected national guide with over 30 years’ experience, Deon provided deep and valuable insight on so many topics – education, economy, industry, religion, social interactions, history, housing, politics, apartheid - during our bus rides and dinner conversations. Hearing ‘why’ was so much more powerful than just being told ‘what’. His respect for the animals, plants, birds and geography was just as evident, and pointing them out, always combined with a fun and/or useful anecdote, kept us engaged the whole trip. Deon didn’t shy away from any topic and he presented an incredibly balanced perspective of some of the more sensitive issues facing the country and its 60 million citizens. He took the time to relate items or costs to that of Canada, making it so much easier for us to grasp.

Beyond the fascinating knowledge sharing of the country provided, Deon’s attention to detail throughout the trip itinerary was superb: Comfort stops at all the right times, accurate estimates of distances and arrival times, regular repetition of daily agendas and meeting times (to accommodate those who don’t listen), ensuring everyone drank enough water, appropriate calls ahead to service providers to ensure their readiness for our arrival, warnings for safety (from crooks, baboons or aloe plants), tips and tricks for how to enjoy a stop. You name it, he anticipated the issue and helped manage our expectations. And to top it off, he always delivered with a smile on his face and a sense of humour.

Thank you, Thompsons, for letting us win the tour guide lottery!

Did a four day tour and garden route trip, cape town table mountain, cape of good hope etc. Wonderful scenery views exceptional. Then the two day safari at garden route had lodge. We saw all the big five and chalet was amazing, small but beautifully formed. I mean comfy bed, airconn, fridge, WiFi, staff and views to die for. This was a private game reserve but was absolutely perfect, we spoke to people who have been to large game reserves and saw much less. Really impressed with our guide and driver DJ. Anthea Pieters was our fabulous guide, she was very knowledgeable, informative, funny and did an amazing job. This was an outstanding your and would highly recommend this company to anyone.

This was my first time to South Africa and traveling with a tour company. I was a little skeptical on how it would go and it exceeded expectations. We had a private driver for our tours while in and leaving Stellenbosch and to and into Cape Town. There was some small miscommunication from the company but the main guide that we had was AMAZING. Mogamat really made the time there and our activities a better experience. Not only was he so knowledgeable but he also took time to get to know us which in turn made him know what we really wanted to see and how to interact with us. He became part of our group and not just our guide. He humored us and participated in our fun. One of my favorite activities was Table Mountain. It was a perfect day for it and go early/first thing to beat the crowds - it'll make it worth it. The coast drive was also fun and we saw and learned so much. The Gold dinner was a great departing activity and even though it's very touristy it was worth it. The food was amazing and they were very helpful with food allergies which I wasn't expecting and was so appreciative of. The company was worth booking with and if you're lucky to get Mogamat or someone close to him then you'll definitely have a fabulous trip.

Hoping this is the right place to write this review. We recently spent two weeks in South Africa. Our trip started with a 5-day safari. After that, we spent the rest of our time visiting other parts of the country. With the exception of the safari, all other activities were managed by Africa Answers who in turn used Thompson's. I cannot say enough about either company. We travel internationally extensively and always live by the manta, "what can go wrong, will, and just roll with it." Not one misstep on the entire trip. We visited Cape Town, the Wine Country, and Johannesburg. We were met promptly at the airports (even when one flight was four hours late). Our pickups for tours were always at least 15 minutes early. Our tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. The vans were more than big enough, clean, and stocked with cold water. If you are looking for tour providers, please consider with Thompson's or Africa Answers (which will utilize Thompson's). Thanks to them...our trip was a great experience.

Well worth the money if you are not in a hurry. Enjoy the stunning mountain view whilst going up with the cable car. Take your time to walk around on the mountain. Have something to drink or eat in the restaurant. Taking lots and lots of photo's. One can just stare in awe... one of God's greatest gifts the humankind.

We booked for a 1pm tour. However, because of winds the cable car was closed and nobody from the company bothered to tell us. As a result we wasted all morning waiting for the tour only to be told at 1pm that the cable car was closed. As it was our last day in Capetown we couldn't reschedule and got no refund of the ticket price. We did take a ride around the mountain but not the same as a trip to the top. My advice is don't pre-book this but wait until you are in Cape Town and hire a taxi on the day, when you know the cable car is working.
Booked through Viator and I cannot find an email address on their website to contact them about this.

First and foremost this is a reserve for animals that have been abandoned and abused. They actually try to rehabilitate the animals. So this is NOT a wild safari. That being said we did get to see the animals in a quasi natural environment. And viewing the lions was quite a shock for all of us. Lunch was very good. The scenery to the reserve was beutiful, but the last several miles to it is VERY rough and bumpy.

We chose this tour for a tour and the Robben Island Tour. It was booked through Trip Advisor, through Viator, through Thompson's and then contracted out to a tour guide. The tour guide was not given all our information and was not informed we were part of the Robben Island tour, so he had to resolve that. He was a good guide offering lots of information about the current and past events. The company scheduled us for a very early pick up, with the next passengers not being picked up for an hour, so our guide gave us an impromptu tour of the city, which was really kind and generous.

The township tour was interesting, eye opening, but went a little long. It was important to see more of Cape Town than just the tourist destinations. The District museum was better than I expected.

Due to the weather, our Robben Island tour was cancelled. It would have been helpful if Thompson's had helped reschedule the ferry tickets. We were dropped off at the ferry port and had to reschedule our tickets ourselves or loose our money. Luckily the ferry team had 2 tickets available for the following day and then were sold out for the following 3 days.

To do it all again, I would take a 1/2 day Cape Town City Tour and Township tour and book the Robben's Island direct through the ferry company.

The Robben Island trip was canceled due to the weather. However, we were not given the chance to reject the whole tour. The rest of this tour, that we had to follow, in order to request for our partial refund, was very poor & discouraging, long with repeated informations, too expensive for the content, and very disappointing at the end. We expected to be notified as soon as Robben Island was canceled. Also, we expected to be offered full refund (not just small partial credit) for the whole tour. Instead, our tour guide told us about the cancelation of Robben after picking us up, when it was too late to cancel our reservation and threatened us to continue with the rest, in order to receive some credit (something like 25% of the whole). We travelled the whole month of May, and that day was the worst day of our entire trip.

*Likely to sell out: Based on Viator’s booking data and information from the provider from the past 30 days, it seems likely this experience will sell out through Viator, a Tripadvisor company.
