All the guides are former prisoners so have a good insiders knowledge of conditions within Robben Island. It gives a very interesting insight into the politics of the day.

Rough sea journey to this harsh, exposed former prison. Guides are former political prisoners and can tell it to you from their own experience. The highlight of course is to see the cell where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 23 years and to learn how he and others with differing opinions , backgrounds, and aspirations learned to adapt and share... After much waiting in line, we were tranported to Robben Island. We were looking forward to seeing Mandela's cell and hearing about prison life. On arrival we were ushered onto a bus for a ride around the island. The young man who gave the tour on the bus was informative and passionate. On arrival at the prison, the group was... More

We took the tour at 1 PM, but ended up leaving after 1.30. All in all we had a great time, the boat trip is very relaxing (we had wonderful weather) and once on the island, we got onto a bus. On the bus we had a very funny guide who told us all about the island, the buildings on... More

Great views on the way to Robben Island of the City! The Prison Tour is very informational and an experience to have! The prison tour is personalized with an ex-prisoner providing great insights by taking you back in time! The opportunity to stand right outside Nelson Mandela's prison was a great moment! The ferry ride to and from Robben Island... More

Booked our trip prior to our arrival in South Africa. Managed to get a slightly earlier ferry (hadn't realised quite how far out the island is so wish I'd taken some travel sickness tablets with me). Once we were off the ferry we were put onto buses for the next part of our tour - tour guide was good, funny... More

Got to visit this historic place of our beautiful country for the second time during the Easter Break of 2017 and I must say, this one visit had an added comfort and feel to it that I liked. Firstly, over holiday weekends and periods, online booking is essential for this tour as you would not like to be told that... More

This is such an important part of not only our South African tourism, but it is critcal to our history and our story as a country. The whole experience from start to finish needs to be spruiced up, from the rude staff at the ticket office to the unkept facilities on the island. There are so many stories NOT being... More

Be prepared for an emotional journey, as you walk in the shoes of Nelson Mandela, Robert Sobukwe and others. The former prisoner guides share their perspectives which makes this an "up close and personal" experience. A must for anyone interested in history, that should never be repeated, so must be understood.
