The Iziko South African Museum houses more than one and a half million specimens of scientific importance. The collections now range from fossils almost 700-million years old to insects and fish caught last week. There are also stone tools made by people 120 000 years ago, traditional clothes from the last century, and T-shirts printed yesterday. The Planetarium, which is housed in the South African Museum building, is a celestial theatre in the round, utilising the complex Minolta star machine and multiple projectors to transport the audience through the wonders of the universe. The ultimate in armchair travel.Inside the domed auditorium, we can recreate the night sky, so whatever the weather outside, the Planetarium sky is always clear, an extraordinary audio-visual experience for old and young.

I visited with my sister on Heritage Day (24 Sept 2016) and enjoyed the free entry and beautiful nature photographs.

We visited the SA Museum for the first time in a while. After seeing on their website that the museum is being renovated, we expected to see much less than we did for our R75 for 2 adults and 2 children. Obviously the Planetariums is...More

Has a decent permanent exhibition. I love going to the special exhibitions they host evry now and again. Great place for young curious children (though not too young).

Unfortunately this museum is rather disappointing as the displays are not maintained and anyone with sinus or asthma issues should avoid this museum as the displays are dusty. Restrooms are available on the ground floor and relatively clean. Entrance fee is R30 pp. I unfortunately...More

We were really impressed with this museum, located in Cape Town's city centre. The exhibits were varied, impressive and informative. The museum is quite substantial in size so one could spend a whole morning here easily.

We really enjoyed this museum! We arrived after the last planetarium show, so we were not able to experience that, but we managed to get through all of the exhibits before the museum closed. The setup is a little maze-like, so we did a bit...More

Some of the exhibits are definitely dated - I remember them from when I was in school! Quite a few walk ways were closed, apparently they are busy with upgrades. Nonetheless it was a real fun day for the kids, especially the dinosaur exhibition was...More
