It's possible to travel through the Western Cape with little contact with the majority black population, except through being served in restaurants and petrol stations, so a township tour is the best way of getting a balanced view of the country. We chose this tour because the proceeds directly benefit a number of important projects. Our guide was very welcoming... More

There are a number of township tours to choose from in Knysna, but I recommend this one because they do much for the community including running a 'safe house' for abused women and children. That said, this is anything but depressing; in fact it's inspiring to see how well life is organized and what a strong sense of community exists... More

Just the most interesting and entertaining trip you can do in South Africa finishes up in the owners house with her 19 kids she looks after for a tea and a sing song just the best fun and cheap as well. Go do it you won't regret it

Townships: you have to avoid them, there are dangerous, nobody wants to live there. Indeed - we were a bit excited, when we waited for the pick up for our Knysna Township Tour. It was a very impressive Expierience and after it we can say - you need to see it in order to understand it. We learned a lot... More

I went on this tour with my 15year old son so we could catch a glimpse of Southern Africa which the tourists don't usually see. It was fascinating and inspiring to hear about Ella's life in the township, she talked about her upbringing, the sense of community in the township and positive developments that are happening in these areas, (immaculate... Ella, Penny and Lwando formed a fantastic team giving us an insight into the township. Despite being a little unsure before we took the trip- we didn't want to make a tourist attraction out of people's everyday lives- we would all fully recommend it. We were both introduced into a tightly-knit community, and got a real sense of the impact... More

A humbling experience that left us hearted for the future of South Africa. The humanity shown to others by Ella will live long in the memory. If you get the chance to go, do soul a favour, and take a bag of sweets and some pencils for the kids.

We signed up to the township tour last minute, having half a day to spare and having missed the opportunity to do the equivalent in Cape Town. We were all so glad that we did - the whole experience was eye-opening and handled in a safe, comfortable and professional manner. Our guide, Z, was very informative and energetic and clearly... This tour gave a fantastic insight into township life. Penny will take you by mini bus around the township and you will get to see many aspects of life in the township. On top of that you will find out what an amazingly kindhearted person Ella is when you visit her home. You will not regret taking this tour. It... More

Emzini Tours gave a wonderful Knysna township tour. They have started a non-profit that builds safe houses, has a soup kitchen, and a orphanage, all in the township. The owners of the company are the guides. They clearly know everyone in the township, keep a bucket of dog food on board to feed the strays in the township as they... More
