We did the garden route from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. Extremely please that we experienced this trip. It may not have the best scenery in the world in comparison to parts of Europe, US, Canada etc but what the Garden Route has is unique -- the history, the beautiful people, the scenic coastline, lagoon, ravines/gorges, miles and miles of... We have been visiting Knysna and the garden route for the past decade. We never get bored as the natural beauty and serenity are unsurpassed any where in the world. This area is highly recommended for nature lover, the artist, the spiritualist, the animal lover, the person needing a break from the city. No matter who you are... if you... More

Today we drove from Oudtshoorn to George to Knysna. The dramatic changes in vegetation, rock colors, topography, animals and buildings is absolutely amazing! Today was Easter Sunday and near end of school holidays so a bit more car and caravan traffic but few big trucks so every driver seemed interested in the scenery and not in mad rushes to destination.... This route is easy to drive and beautiful. I drove from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth with two boys. They loved the route stopping off along the way at Knysna and Plett Bay. An amazing country with lovely people. Sue

Wonderful area with sweeping tracts of coastal forest, fynbos and varied birdlife. Kynsna Lagoon teeming with birdlife. Lovely area in general.

If you live in South Africa, you haven't visited the Garden Route but you've done many oversees trips, then you need to ask yourself.... Are you even South African? Undoubtedly the most scenic part of SA, with undulating roads, spectacular ocean views, unspoilt beaches, mountain passes, splendid green forests, gruelling hiking trails, delightful food and craft markets, tons of adventurous... The best town we visited was Plettenberg Bay, I thought. Knysna is good. I would omit Mossel Bay, unless very interested in Diaz Museum.

We always heard about the garden route. But travelling it, was an awesome experience. It is really worth the while to take a drive. Just don't do it in one day - way too many attractions to visit.
