Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have traveled extensively and are interested in our Jewish heritage and sites. This one was disappointing. Clearly much work went into creating it. We came in the pouring rain and, as there is nowhere nearby to park that was obvious, we had walked up the relatively steep path on wet cobblestones, although part is paved and has star indicators. The receptionist was most interested in getting her data down as to our home location. We are a couple our 70s, and it was clear we were weary from our travels. She said there was no WC and there would be one at the castle, another hike away. I fail to believe she does not have a restroom that could be used under these circumstances. The museum is all in Portuguese and the English booklet did not always correspond, nor tell us more than we had gathered before coming. I would not recommend going out of your way to come here, and I regret that I need to say this. The only reason to come is to show support for the fact that is is there.

Our group tried to visit this museum. The sign on the door said that it was open from 2pm to 5pm at this time of year. We arrived at 2pm, but no-one was there. We waited, and waited. We knocked on the door. We rang the local tourist office, who confirmed that it was due to open at 2pm. Eventually, we had to leave, as we had other places to visit. Very disappointed.

This is an interesting old house which was once used as a sinagogue. It was an interesting place and yet we left not feeling like we had really learned that much about its Jewish history. It needs more signage and information for the visitor.

Recovered house situated in the old Jewish quarter.
Apart from half a dozen objects it has nothing else pertaining to the Jewish faith. They themselves admit, in one of their information boards, that there are no archaeological findings that can attest that the house was formerly a place of cult.

The whole Jewish quarter is an amazing historical site. Authentic and very well preserved. The museum is a memorial to the many executed during the inquisition as well as honoring the Jewish workmen ship in the town and to us the most amazing Torah alter that was hidden as kitchen shelves for hundreds of years. Must comment that all written material is only in Portuguese, hope they will soon add English.

This is the perfect place to learn and understand the Jewish Heritage in Portugal. The synagogue/museum of Castelo de Vide give us a chance to know how was the Jewish live 500 years ago when thousands of Jewish people run away from the Spanish inquisition. A place to learn and to remember how life could be so unfair.

The blond woman at the entrance is not friendly with visitors. In fact, she is the less sympathetic and more rude person I've met in Portugal. La mujer rubia de la entrada no es amable con los visitantes; de hecho es la persona más antipática y borde que he conocido en Portugal.

This is a must-see in Castelo de Vide, or even this part of Alentejo. An amazing work has been done to recover the old synagogue and make it a beautiful, touching monument to the half-forgotten history of the Jewish community in Portugal.

This former synagogue in the old Jewish quarter of town shows in a superb way as a museum the life 500 years ago and even has a remembrance room with the names of those citizens being extinguished by the inquisition, it is all in Portuguese would be nice to get a bit of a translated sheet from the friendly lady at the entrance

Do you have an airport shuttle to Pearson and if yes is it free?
Written 13 January 2015
There seems to be some confusion here - the synagogue is in a small village in Portugal, and the only Pearson airport I know of is in Toronto. A shuttle between the two would be tricky to arrange!
