Arriving at the main Koper Square is a paradise for the soul. Surrounded by beautiful buildings leaves us breathless. So we decided to stay in this square for as long as possible with a cup of coffee and soak up the breath of the past. The central town square (formerly Platea Communis) with worldly and ecclesiastical buildings that show all the splendor of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles, is today a quality and valuable artistic setting that arouses the attention, curiosity and admiration of visitors. The square got its present appearance in the 15th century, when the Praetorian Palace, the seat of the Koper podestates and captains, and the Grand Council (Maggior consiglio) grew on the southern edge. Construction took place in the Gothic and Renaissance style, with baroque remodeling in the 17th century. Under the portico, at the entrance to Shoemaker Street, the remains of the first 14th-century city loggia (Lobia vetus) are visible. The western edge of the square is closed by Foresteri and Armeri from the 15th and the 16th century. Foresteria adorned the Renaissance portal "Del Corte" and the buildings served as city offices, weapons depots and pawn shops (Monte di Pietà). The city loggia was built in the second half of the 15th century in characteristic Venetian Gothic style, and was upgraded and reworked in the 17th century. From midel of the 19th century, it housed the Loggia city café.

We walked through the Piazza Tito, it was pleasant enough. Just not very inviting or colorful but has great potential. Not enough there to cause you to want to spend more time.

The day we were there was cool and wet. The square is not a large as I thought it would be. There are several sites adjacent to it including the Palace, tower and also the tourist information office. From the square we walked down to the gate and turned left. After walking for a while we saw the tower and ended up back at the square.

Koper developed on a rocky island, that the Romans known as Capris, and created the foremost of its 3 coastal cities. to the present day, there are exchanges of many rulings and countries that have given their seal and its name: for the Romans it had been Capris; throughout the time of Pope Pontiff (l. 599) Insula Capraria (Goat Island), for Byzantines (mid sixth to eighth century) Justinopolis; for the Patriarchs of Aquileia Caput Histriae (the head of Istria), Venetians modified their name to the Italian style of Capodistria, the Slovene version of that became Koper.

The Venetian Republic (1279-1797) was the longest during this region, once Koper skilled a powerful economic (trade, salt) and cultural flourishing (painting, music). Today, we are able to still admire the remnants of the Venetian era in urban design, which, despite nice new-age operations, has preserved its medieval look. this is often conjointly the explanation why Koper is enclosed within the Association of European Medieval Cities. within the past, Koper was AN island enclosed by a wall connected to the solid ground by a picket bridge (towards Škocjan), protected by a mighty defense - the Lion's castle, and in depth salt pans around Koper. Koper began to lose its leading role within the eighteenth century once Trieste was declared a free port, and eventually lost it to the collapse of the Venetian Republic.

In the nineteenth century till the primary warfare (the reign of Napoleon's French Empire 1806-1813 and also the Habsburg autocracy 1813-1918), Koper began to alter in line with economic and social development. This was the time once the salt pans began to crumble and were finally abolished in 1912, however the town solely began to lose its image of the island. In 1825 a second road reference to the solid ground (Semedelska cesta) was engineered, and within the middle of the nineteenth century a coastal road association, then a sea connection with Trieste and in 1902 a railway connection between Trieste and Poreč.

Under the dominion of European nation, the town fully lost the island's look by boning the abandoned saltpans.

The time once the Second warfare brought plenty of changes. till the completion of the border, once Koper signed the London note in Oct 1954 to the then Serbia and Montenegro, it belonged to the Yugoslav military authority among zone B, foremost the urban center Giulia, and from Sep 1947 it had been a part of a state formation known as Free Trieste. once the town became a part of Serbia and Montenegro, the national composition that fully brought new branch of knowledge interventions within the core of Koper and its surroundings modified fully, and also the town skilled a powerful development - a port.

Today, Koper is each AN economically and tourist-oriented town that develops bathing, nautical, sports and searching touristry. It conjointly became a university place.

On the most sq. of Koper, Titov trg, you'll be able to see several cultural attractions:

1. Praetorian palace, the foremost distinguished Koper palace

With the restored Pretorian Palace in might 2001, the Municipality of Koper got a house within the center of the town and on the sq. that has preserved its original municipal style to the present day. it's a typical urban arrangement of the Mediterranean area, that in Koper, owing to its closeness, reminds the town hall.

2. City Tower

It is primarily a Romanesque architecture fortification facility that was within the amount from 15th-17th. centuries changed into a belfry and serves nowadays as a viewing purpose. The cathedral bell tow with the oldest bell in Slovenija, i used to be casting in 1333. The oldest bell is that the following:

T (em) P (o) RE EGREGII ET POTENTIS SOURCES D (omi) NO PETRI Delaware CANALI HONOR (abilis) POT (estatis) ET CAPITAN (ei)

JVSIN (opoli) S MARCE S NAZARII speak P (ro) wealthy man (is)

Letter. that area unit written in brackets, there's no bell. Individual words area unit written with abbreviations.

The neighboring building, Armeria, served as a weapons store (armory) till 1550, however later it became a town savings bank or a loan office for the poor (ex cards di Pietà) and therefore the offices of town offices and vicode. The erst separate buildings were connected within the eighteenth century, once they conjointly inflated the Armerio for one floor.

It stands in a very place in-built antiquity, and before today's church there was a Romanesque architecture basilica. The history of the cathedral dates back to the twelfth century once the city received its own jurisdiction. The church has several treasures: 3 paintings by Vittora Carpaccia: an oversized altar painting "Madonna with a baby on the throne and saints" from 1516 and 2 smaller "Presentation within the Temple" and "The Injury of the Innocent Children", a stone casket of the shielder of St. Nazarius from the fifteenth century et al. within the edifice of the cathedral, the valuable image of the author, A. Close to the cruise terminal and centre of the town - you cant miss it when you walk from your ship and it's well worth exploring the area.

Get a map from the tourist office and stroll round the town - nice and peaceful and good to visit.

My wife and I visited Koper on a cruise ship and after our excursion returned to the ship I took some time to explore the town, despite it being very windy and wet. The centrepiece to the town is Tito Square, which is bordered by the Cathedral and the venetian-style Praetorian Palace.

The clock tower to the cathedral is impressive and stands tall over the city. You can climb the tower normally (I believe a small charge applies) but the town was deserted when I was there and the tower was closed, although it wasn't really the weather to take photos to be honest.

The square is just a short walk from the cruise port and there are steps and an elevator to get from the water side to the street level to see the square. There are many narrow alleyways leading off the square which have interesting shops and bars and are worth exploring if you are there when they are open.

I didn't stay long here as it was cold and wet but on a nice day the climb to the top of the cathedral tower would be on my 'must do' things in Koper.

Lots of interesting buildings with a good smattering of cafes and shops. Worth a trip in. Can get busy later with competing walking tours.

When we arrived in town from our cruise ship, it was a Saturday. To tell you the truth, I was disappointed when we walked through the town for several blocks, to find shops not open and Tito Square felt deserted. It was a very, very quiet town, that frankly I don't know why it is a cruise stop. To answer it myself, I would say it is close to Trieste, Piran, etc. That is frankly the best choice if you go there.
