Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It's in the main central square of the old city, so we stopped for photos and then went across the square for a good coffee. From the coffee house, we gazed across the square to the Palace. The major building in town.

A few minutes walk from the cruise ship port takes you to this beautiful, postcard like place.

It reminds me of the Serenissima and has a "back in time" Venetian ambience.

Don't forget to check with the friendly tourist info located inside the building.

We stopped in Koper on a cruise (Princess) to Venice and decided to tour the old city center ourselves since it was a short walk from the cruise port. The 15th Century Praetorian Palace is located on the old city square (Tito Square) which is also home to the Koper Cathedral and Bell Tower. It also has a delicious ice cream / gelato shop. The Palace was built from two older 13th Century houses that were connected by a loggia, rebuilt many times, and then finished as a Venetian Gothic Palace. Today, it is home to the city hall, wedding hall, and tourist office and is considered one of the city’s architectural landmarks. The day we stopped in Koper it was very quiet and peaceful with very few tourists around.

A day trip to Koper gave us only limited time to explore the attractions. We went to the Tourist Office in the Praetorian Palace and asked if it was possible to tour the Palace. As the next tour was a couple of hours we decided to buy a Koper card and visit some of the other attractions first. Although we had a map of the town it was not very easy to follow so we returned to the Tourist Office for more information. We then discovered that several of the attractions closed at 13.00 and did not reopen until after we were due to leave. Learn from our mistake and ensure sites are clearly marked on map and you know the opening hours before leaving the Tourist Office.
When we returned for our tour of the Palace, Tim, our guide, was very knowledgable and took us through the building where we saw both ancient (the apothecary shop) and modern (state of the art council chamber) housed within the same building. Renovations have been done sympathetically and the Murano glass chandeliers in the Wedding room have to be seen to be believed.

I love this building, it lived up to my expectations, though interestingly the front is just a facade. It doesn't detract from its beauty for me.

The tourist info office, is inside, but don't expect them to be helpful. We had researched the town on the internet buit thought that the tourist info might have some useful advice. We asked them to recommend what we should do in our day in Koper and was handed a leaflet and told it's all in there! I glanced at the laflet, number one was the building we were stood in, and number two wa the market. SO I asked if the market was on today, I was told yes and they gave us directions. I decided this was the best I was going to get. We headed off to the market to discover it was closed!

The tourist office is situated in the Palace, and I asked if it was possible to have a guided tour. For €5 I had a personal guided tour of the whole building, including the Council Chamber and the Wedding Room, and it's worth noting the different ceiling decorations in each room. The price included a ticket to go up the Bell Tower.

While we were visiting Tito Square in Koper, we found the Praetorian Palace building. It houses the town hall and visitor’s center for Koper.

We stopped by to get a tourist map of the city.

It is an interesting building that dates back to the 1400’s with Venetian Gothic architecture

At its peak of influence Venice dominated the trade in this part of the world. You can see this influence in Koper at the Palace. The front facade is meant to make it look larger and more impressive, more like the buildings in Venice. The palace is still in use today as a government building but parts of it can be toured for a fee. We walked around the outside instead and enjoyed the area around Tito Square. Lots of smaller adorable shops and restaurants at prices much lower than other cities in Europe and we found the people delightful.
