A must see stop when visiting BA

The most spectacular book shop you'll ever see in your life! The most beautiful old theatre now recreated into a book shop. Stunning!

No books in English here, just a fantastic converted theatre with a cute cafe on the stage. Well worth a visit

We totally enjoy this treasure of a place that is free and open to the public. It is so nice to know that the old opera house has been restored and turned into a beautiful bookstore and cafe. We have visited with friends several times as part of a "secret treasures" tour of BA.

For the shopper strolling along Santa Fe, a place not to miss is the Athena Bookstore just past the Callao intersection, called the Grand Splendid. Aside from the fabulous selection of books, the building itself was once a grand theatre built in 1919, where iconic tango artists like Charles Gardel performed for over 1000 fans. Later it became a cinema,... More

Visited because of curiosity, not to buy a book. Was alright, fun to see how people have coffee at the stage between the curtains. Not a major highlight though.

I continued to read about El Ateneo and must say that the pictures just do not do the location justice. For those of us that love book stores, it is a find. And admittedly on a hot summer day, a way to stay cool while looking through the wide selection of books. I decided to bring home beautiful adult coloring... More

It's a library within a renovated theater. It's a beautiful spot to visit, have a coffee and browse at books. But the books are really expensive and the variety of books is not as good as other stores such as Cúspide

Library in the theater. it looks very nice. A coffee invites you to relax. Then continue to the next spot

It's just beautiful!! Apparently used to be a theater. Wish I could read Spanish and just buy a book and read at the coffee place. The English part is really poor

Staying in Recoleta

Neighbourhood Profile
Recoleta
Characterised by the French-style mansions which are the legacy of its aristocratic past, Recoleta is the true “Paris of the South.” Walking around this neighbourhood is an experience like no other in Buenos Aires: its streets are lined with elegant apartment buildings, exclusive boutiques, and former mansions turned into high-end hotels and embassies, which exude an alluring air of sophistication and class. You'll also find a rich cultural scene centred on the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Library, and the Recoleta Cultural Center; as well as some great shopping spots, like the Buenos Aires Design Mall with an artists' fair set up in Plaza Francia every weekend.
