Top ways to experience Usina del Arte and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: La Boca
A neighbourhood defined by its immigrant roots, La Boca still maintains this past alive in its streets today. Due to its proximity to the river, the neighbourhood became the preferred settling area for immigrants of a wide variety of origins, who ended up living together in the conventillos. Thus, these houses became a melting pot of different cultures and traditions that birthed creations like tango and lunfardo. Nowadays, this legacy can be seen and felt on Caminito Street, which welcomes visitors with colourful facades, cobblestones, and street artists showcasing their skills. Just like its neighbor San Telmo, La Boca is one of the prime destinations to experience the traditions and customs that originated from the city’s immigrant past and which have shaped its distinct identity.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The cultural center was inaugurated in 2011 in what it used to be and old and abandoned electric power house. The building itself is remarkable in an Italian romantic style fashion.
This week there are women related events and children activities. The main hall is also one of our concert places with the orchestra. Beautiful acoustics.

It has two auditorium with excellent accoustic. All brand new wooden walls and stage. Many different shows changing weekly.
Be careful when leaving the premises after a show if it is dark, because the area is not safe. call a cab. Do not go walking to take a bus at night.

This is a electrical powerplant that was built a 100 years ago by a mixed Italian-Argentinean consortium, to supply electricity to the neighbourhood. Throughout the decades, it was emptied of its machinery and left abandoned. A few years ago, the town decided to upheaval it and turn it into a "multi-functional artistic space". This includes: halls for exhibitions and two auditoriums, one bigger, the other smaller. The adaptation works are marvelous, it's worth the visit just to admire how a factory has been turned into a museum! However the programming gives the impression of looking for a definitive identity. It is located in "Barracas" not far from the "Boca" neighbourhood.

La Boca is dodgy at the best of times, and USINA is a bit off the beaten tourist path. Hence dangerous. Taxi in, and taxi out.
I understand what the city is trying to do - gentrify the 'hood - but that is years away.
Just because they have free 11:30 am concerts does not mean its worth the safety risk.

Well, more accurately, hard to return from. Like many cities, BA took a abandoned structure (in this case a power plant - usina is Spanish for plant - though this perhaps the prettiest power plante every built) and turned it into a hip space for art. The Usina del Arte includes a concert hall, which is where we saw the Pit Orchestra of the Teatro Colon perform a free orchestral concert, as well as numerous other spaces. I believe most activities are free like the concert we saw and there's a definite mixing of folks from the middle and upper classes in attendance. I'm not sure how well a job they do of drawing in the locals from the surrounding, more impoverished areas. And that brings me back to the title - there's no transportation structure yet to support the Usina. It's in the middle of a dangerous area so you can't really go looking for a taxi. Thankfully the box office was kind enough to call a taxi for me. And a few days later, I learned about the app EasyTaxi, which functions like Uber for many Latin American cities. Otherwise, the Usina is a great place to hear and see an eclectic collection of performers from all genres in a cool, comfortable setting, even if it's needs a few more amenities (a bar and concession, and perhaps some clearer signage inside).

I danced on the stage here for the Festival BA - the Mundial de Tango. It is a two week festival of dance and music spread all over the city of Buenos Aires in August every year. This is a medium sized theatre with lots of exhibition space around it.The sound is terrific, the seats are comfortable. The only drawback to this theatre is that the backdrop and floor are natural wood, and give everything a yellow tint. A central space is used for a dance floor for group lessons and tango parties. There is a small cafe outside the front door, but they are often very busy. Usina del Arte is located in Boca, south of the central district and Puerto Madero, but taxis are cheap and there are lots of buses stopping right in front, if you can navigate those. There is a train in the courtyard for a good photo backdrop.

Attended this venue as part of the Festival BA - Mundial de Tango. Large auditorium for performances, and large spaces for exhibitions. Could do with more food options as it has only one very small but nice cafe, and there were thousands of people attending events at the same time.

And old electrical plant builded by the British was transformed into this beautiful museum and cultural center. A bonus: the Cinema Museum is situated a couple of meters from the Usina. A tip: get there in a taxi, and get out of there with another one you call from some known service. It is a risky area.
