Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Such a beautiful place. One of the few canyons that you can actually cross it end to end. The rock formations are incredible. Sadly you can not really do trekking here as the tours are basically done by car as the canyon crossing is quite long. Anyway it will be great to have trekking opportunities in a such an amazing place.

Worth visiting, one of nature’s wonders. Allow a full day for sightseeing the various landscapes and spots. It is a long safe drive, plan to hace fuel, to take food & drinks, not much on the way. Just amazing breathtaking landscapes. Enjoy!

Well, if you are in town and need to choose one thing to do: This is your best option. I strongly recommend to start the trip up in El Nihuil down to Valle Grande as the vast majority of the traffic flow go in this direction. It’s possible to begin in Valle Grande but It’s more pleasant and easy to drive backwards from El Nihuil to Valle Grande.
The road is AMAZING, a beautiful Canyon, close to the river, great views, bunch of picnic spots so it’s an incredible experience. The whole road can take up to 5 or 6 hours if you stop. If you are hurry, you can do it in only 2 hours.
For best pictures is better to start in the morning - noon and the location of the sun is perfect and colors are more vivid.
Enjoy!.
Last but not least, there are Very few services during the road so make sure you bring enough water and food!.

Just a few minutes drive out of San Rafael, one enters the surrounding desert, then slowly begins the climb to Valle Grande, following the path of the Rio Atuel as it tumbles from the heights to the desert floor. Glimpses show white water rafters passing, folks enjoying picnics along the banks and small clusters of campgrounds or cabins along the way. A beautiful drive, where you can also stop and have a regional meal of grilled meats or empanadas. For the adventurous, there are zip lines, hang gliding and horseback rides available.

If you are in San Rafael, it is worthwhile to take the public bus that stops on Calle Balloffet to go to Valle Grande. Only costs about US$5 equivalent round trip. Or can take tours to do rafting, 4 wheel drive tours, hot springs etc in the area through the canyons.

I didn't have that much time so took the public bus (can get schedule from the helpful city tourist office) Took about an hour through pleasant winery/orchards along the river to the Dam and lake. Got off and walked on the Dam. Unfortunately, too much trash up there & Lake shows effect of drought though still pretty enough. Can rent boats & kayaks if walk down a lot of stairs. There is a restaurant too with outdoor seating and nice view. Music on - some like music; I would have preferred quiet to enjoy the nature.

Best thing was walk down the canon from the Lake along the road next to the river. It was peaceful, quiet, and gorgeous in areas. Lots of rafting companies and restaurants along the river. Took a few hours to walk around, had lunch and then caught the bus back. Very pleasant day.

One of the most beautiful and lovely places I’ve visited. Definitely worth spending a day or two rafting (family friendly) and relaxing by the lake.

This canyon is beautiful and had amazing geology. We took a tour and really regretted it, because it only stops at the dams. So much geology and we only looked at 99% through tinted and dirty windows. Go, but rent a car and drive yourself for maximum time and viewing.

I am originally from Mendoza and I have been to Atuel Canyon several times but this year took my partner and I enjoyed this scenery from a different perspective. When you grow on a place sometimes you miss the beautiful surroundings, but the canyon is actually worthy and quite impressive. It may not be as breath-taking as the Grand Canyon, but still beautiful. You can take a tour with any of the tourist companies from Mendoza town that will have a guide telling you some geographical and historical details of the place or go in your own car, or rent one, and read any information on the guide.
Ideally, you need to spend the whole day and leave early from Mendoza town. If you plan to do some water sports in the damn, I would recommend you to stay nearby.
The damn is quite beautiful as well and you can take a boat to grasp its size and beauty.
Overall, I would recommend you seeing the canyon if you are planning to go to Mendoza some days and can spare a full day for this excursion.

Fantastic and absolutely stunning drive, it takes a day but it is really worth it. It is easy to do with a normal car if you drive carefully
