Touring the ravine is an unmissable experience! The landscape is overwhelming...
The route borders the Rio Grande all the time. The ravine is wide and although the road is a little winding, the route is very good and travel is comfortable. It does not cause dizziness or vertigo, for those who suffer from it. It is truly a trip for everyone!
On the way to the ravine, coming from San Salvador de Jujuy, there are many places to visit: first of them Purmamarca and the hill of the 7 colors (nice to spend the night and do the red walk in the morning before returning); Maimará which has a beautiful viewpoint; the post of the tropic of Capricorn with its sundial; Tilcara and Pucará (an ancient city preserved and rebuilt on the summit): Humahuaca and Hornocal.
But the same route of the ravine is a walk in itself, due to the beauty of the colors, the spaciousness of the spaces, the light, the air...
Highly recommended!

It is a valley, located in Jujuy, 155 km long, surrounded by beautiful mountains of incredible colors. It has several beautiful places, such as Purmanarca with Cerro de los 7 colors, Maimara with Palette of Painter, Tilcara with Pucara, Uquia with Quebrada de las Señoritas, Humahuaca with Serranías de Hornocal and much more. We stopped in Tilcara and from there we toured several places of this incredible beauty. An unforgettable trip!

The Quebrada de Humahuaca is located in the province of Jujuy, in the north of Argentina. The gorge is flanked on either side by multi-striated hills that are streaked with rich, vivid, blue, green, orange, yellow and red colours. This streaking effect, which gives this valley its trademark, along with its length (155.4 km) makes the landscape of the Quebrada de Humahuaca truly outstanding and dramatic. It is an Unesco World Heritage Site, and justifiably so, as there is nothing else like it in the world. The journey along the spectacular route carved out by the Rio Grande is an unforgettable one. As you make your way along the ravine, you come across the Cerro de los Siete Colores (the Hill of Seven Colours); a small hill outside the village of Purnamarca, streaked from top to bottom with pastel colours. Once in Purnamarca, a white-washed colonial town with adobe houses and dusty streets, you can look up from the central square, and see yet again the Cerro de los Siete Colores. It is even more breathtaking viewed from the square, and a sight you can never tire from. Onwards, you come across yet another natural wonder, La Paleta del Pintor (the Painter’s Palette); a hillside lined across with colours that rise in peaks, and gradually deepen as they reach the top (just like a painter’s palette). You then continue, and cross over the Tropic of Capricorn, indicated by a stone slab embedded with the astrological sign of a Capricorn. When you finally arrive to the top of the valley, to the village of Humahuaca, you are rewarded with a view of the surrounding sand-coloured hills studded with cacti. The plaza is cool and refreshing, a nice break from the heat of the sun that beats down relentlessly. Well worth a visit, is the Iglesia de la Candelaria, with its gleaming white twin towers, located on the plaza. Time now to slip into a chair of a restaurant’s shady terrace and enjoy a thick Argentinean steak with a good bottle of Malbec.

We just had a great week in northern Argentina. We visited Salta, Jujuy, Purmamarca and the Salinas Grandes and during the trip couldn't help notice that the landscape was very similar to that of the southwestern USA.
We took a guided 4X4 trip along the Tren de los Nubes (Train of the Clouds) route and it was beautiful. Along the way we saw the old train tracks winding their way through the mountains as we drove across small rivers and stopped to take pictures of wild llamas and vicunas.
There were massive gorges, canyons and red/orange colored rocky mountains everywhere. We felt like we were driving through the Grand Canyon and since so much of the landscape had been eroded by wind and rain, we actually saw "hoo-doos" - melted rock formations- that are common in Bryce Canyon National Park. It was a real treat.
Our guide, Fernanado, stopped along the way so we could take some pictures as he explained the formation of the various canyons and the history of the small villages that we visited (including one with only 18 inhabitants...---talk about a small town!) Besides that, Fernando introduced us to his friends who were musicians performing at one of the traditional restaurants that we visited and they sang happy birthday in Spanish for one of the people on the trip!
Fernando spoke e perfect English (with a Brit accent), as well as Spanish, German and Hebrew too and he did a great job!
We booked our trip, "The Best of the Northwest- Salta & Jujuy", with Say Hueque Tours in Argentina and they did a great job. We highly reccommend them too!

This was the second day of a tour out of Salta, staying overnight in Purmamarca which meant we saw the spectacular seven-coloured mountain at its best in the morning light, which I would recommend. Purmamarca is at one end of the gorge and Humahuaca is at the other. The scenery throughout is outstanding and well deserves to be a UNESCO heritage site - and the archeological site at Tilcara is worth a visit, both for the history and the cacti - lots of photo-opportunities there. Humahuaca is another interesting litle village, with a typically Spanish colonial town square and an enormous Indian monument towering above it. I'd recommend a two day trip taking in the safari to the clouds, altiplano and salt flats on day 1, and the gorge on day 2. You can do a day tour from Salta, but it would be a very long day.

Humahuaca was the last small town I visited in the Salta-Jujuy region, and boy was I glad I saved it for the last. It is a picturesque and charming little town with cobblestone streets, adobe houses, a charming town square and a pretty church. After the rather dismal San Antonio de Las Cobres, the somewhat boring Cachi and Cafayate and quiet Purmamarca, Humahuaca was a breath of fresh air. There were actually things you could do in the town.
At noon everyday, the church bells chime and a life-size figure of San Francisco Solano emerges from the clock tower, reminiscent of a cuckoo clock. Artesenal shops also line the main square and offer a good selection of handicraft, clothes and other knick knacks.

We took an all day tour out of Salta to see Purmamarca and Humahuaca with a short stop in Jujuy. The entire trip was rather incredible, due in no small part to our guide, who was knowledgeable/passionate about the history of the area. The landscapes, the natives, the battles for independence, the revolution - all were brought to life by our guide. Facinating stories which gave us a deeper sense of awareness about the country we were travelling through. One word of caution, though. It is a long day trip (we left the hotel at 6:45am and returned at 8:30pm). However, our guide made the time go by quickly with her knowledgeable commentary.

Quite the most stunning scenery my wife and I have ever scene mainly because of the several layers of colours in the rock from mineral deposits over the centuries. The new road to Chile From Pumamarca is magnificent climbing steadily to 4100 metres before reaching the salt plains. The only traffic we met were huge lorries transporting goods between the 2 countries and the odd 4x4 which added to to the romance and remoteness of the area. On going through the valley we had the fantastic fortune to see several condors leterally a few feet above our heads. Be careful not to drive off the road in excitement and don't stop too quickly as there might be a fast 4x4 just coming up behind you who's quite used to such sights and will blast his horn at you as he did to me!

Over several days we journeyed up this canyon of the Rio Grande which runs some 100 miles north starting in San Salvador de Jujuy and ends in Bolivia. We explored the villages of Purmamarca beneath the “Hill of Seven Colors”, Tilcara where we stayed for three nights and then up to the Kolla town of Humahuaca where we experienced the last day of the Carnival of the Devil (Diablos Festivos) to glorify Mother Earth.
The Quebrada (gorge) de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is spectacular in all its glory where incredibly colorful geological formations abound. I was in awe. It is dramatic mountain scenery at its best with many fantastic villages where the descendants of the indigenous Andean families have lived for centuries.
