Look down from the clifftop to a colony of sea lions in the natural reserve of Punta Loma. Binoculars are needed for a decent view of the wildlife. Many sea birds can be seen too. There is no access to the beach for a close up view. A path of about 500 metres leads to a second view point of the same beach, but is closer to sea lions swimming in the breakers.
Trips from Puerto Madryn are readily available but it is only a 20 to 30 minute taxi ride.

Punta Loma is the site of the only permanent South American Sea Lion rookery in the Gulf of Nuevo. SItuated about 17 km south of Puerto Madyrn, it is about 30 mins travel by bus along mostly dirt tracks once you left the city limits. At the entrance to the site, there is the administrative offices of the Provincial Reserve and restrooms. And then another 10 mins further up the road to the parking area. From there just a short walk to the South Observation Point located about 50m above the sea lion rookery. From here you will be able to have a very good view of the sea lions on the beach below and the rock shags nesting on the cliff walls. On-site there are a few information boards providing interesting information about the Sea Lions and Rock Shags. There is also a 360 metres walking trail (about 20 mins) along the the cliff top to the North Observation Point from which you can also have another view of the sea lion rookery. Along this walking trail, you may be able to observe other wildlife such as the Azara's agouti, a small rodent, looking for food among the bushes. Overall the location is quite scenic and you can get some good panoramic shots of the cliffs, the sea and the sky. Usually the visit to this site is combined with other nearby attractions to make it a more attractive half day tour proposition for visitors, otherwise by itself it is just an average attraction.

We went with Madryn Buceo to do swimming with sea lions and it was spectacular!!
Our guide Julián was fabulous, so friednly and funny. Right when we jumped to the water sea lion came to us and were playing and biting us softly :)... It was one of the most amazing things we did in our life!!!

We collected many photos from Madryn Buceo and had a lot of fun on the boat there as well by drinking mate and watching whales and theit pups :-)

We visited here on tour book from our cruise ship. It is an interesting place to visit but very hard to see the wildlife. If there are very many people there it is hard to get space in order to a good view of the seals.

about 40 minutes away by car from the center of Puerto Madryn. 40 minutes or soon a gravel road. You come across this oasis of wildlife.
There are toilets at the site, and while there is no entrance fee you can leave a donation.
You start of by lokking at a look out point where you see the sea lions below on a beach and then you can take a walk for about 5 minutes to see a more panoramic view of the sea lions.
You can spend up to a hour here to enjoy these sea lions.

The entrance fee is reasonable (30 pesos for residents) and the toilets are clean and well-maintained. The rangers are friendly and knowledgeable and the short trail has information on the uses of indigenous plants. The viewing platform is great for watching the sea lion colony and the rock shags. I am very happy that I visited as it had not been recommended to me and I might have missed it; I enjoyed hiring a bike to get there though the road can be sandy and has some long steady inclines both on the way there and back. Otherwise, it would be a short stop in a car (please drive slowly past the cyclists so they don't have to eat your dust!) I really enjoyed the peace and tranquility once the tourist groups had passed by.

We visited Puerto Madryn on the Star Princess in February. We booked a tour with an on-line tour operator called BestDay.com. This was a big mistake as the local operator has us booked for a tour in the afternoon, around when the ship left! They scrambled to find someone to take us - ended up with a guy who spoke no English, had a car which was dirty and a cracked windshield. We even had to pay to enter the park - this was supposed to have been included in the price. The tour was to have lasted for 4 hours - we were back in Puerto Madryn in less than one hour. Apart from that, the tide was in and we only saw 3 sea lions swimming in the sea - the beach where they usually rest was covered with water. Be careful when booking tours on-line, especially with this company.

We cycled here which on reflection wasn't the best idea. Its only 17km out of Puerto Madryn but about half of that is on a gravel road that is much better suited to quad bikes than bicycles. There's also quite a lot of traffic on the road and every time a car goes past it blows up great swarms of dust which are fairly unpleasant.

When you first enter the park the smell is amazingly bad. Not sure if its pollution or tidal but it was really unpleasant. Its about another mile up to the cliff where you can view the sea lions. It was high tide when we got there so we could sea a few heads bobbing around in the water but not the great colony we were expecting. The rangers could not have been more lovely and friendly.

So for other travellers i would recommend: drive there, don't cycle, it's just not that great for cycling. If you do cycle wear a mask, carry lots of water and expect to be completely covered in dust when you get there. Check the tides before you set out and visit at low tide when you will get to see all of the sea lions. There's no need to do an organised tour its only a short drive out of town. Be prepared for the smell!

What i really loved the most about this place was the number of locals who were taking their kids or elderly relatives up there for a little stroll. Worth the trip, but plan better than we did.

What a great experience. We were on a Norwegian cruise and there was a tour operator on the pier that offered a city tour and Punta Loma for 40.00/person. What a great deal. This was about a 3 hour tour and the guide pointed out local points of interest around the city before arriving at Punta Loma. I thoroughly enjoyed this excursion and would recommend it to others who enjoy nature and wildlife. If you visit on your own, there is an admission fee.
