Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Review for the Cerro Cristal hike near Lago Roca, in Los Glaciares National Park.

The Cerro Cristal hike does not seem to be super popular but it is a great one. I only saw 3 people the whole day.
Magnificent rewarding 360° views on the top including the PM glacier, and also absolute silence as you near the top when the violent winds take a break (which is not often).

When you reach the top, it can be extremely windy and chilly, it was freezing below 0C and insanely windy in March. Bring extra layers, warm footwear and gloves.

One of the companies at the bus station in Calafate do a round-trip transport to the Lago Roca campsite. 1h on gravel road. The bus gives you enough time to do this hike only if you do it faster than official times, but it wasn’t a problem. Official times are 4h up, 3h down, it’s a steep challenge much of the way up. If relatively fit and you rush up worrying about your return bus, it’s possible to get up in roughly 2 h.

From the campsite walk back on the road to the well indicated beginning of the hike. Careful to clearly agree with the driver on when & where he picks you up !

We took a detour to Lago Roca after our visit to Perito Moreno Glacier. The road to the lake is on a dirt road off the main hwy for approx. 30 km. It was late afternoon and we were not sure how long it would take to reach the park. By the time we reached the park, we still had about another hr or so before sunset, so we drove to the end to the Estancia with sheep and horses; did not go down to the lake side. On the way back to El Calafate, the sunsets were very beautiful with storm clouds.

Cero Cristal hike was originally on our itinerary for an all day excursion, but after driving the dirt road, approx 68 km from El Calafate, we decided not to return the next day. If we had more time in El Calafate, we would have returned to Lago Roca for the hike, which was recommended by our airbnb hostess.

My review is based on our initial impression, which seemed like an interesting place to explore with more time.

My boyfriend and I were staying in the free camping area as it was more natural and rustic but went multiple times to eat at the Lago Roca restaurant, buy snacks at their store and ask the employees for tips. We noticed we were being charged much more than other Spanish speaking clients for dinner, were not allowed to use their washrooms even after buying multiple items and dinner, etc. We even once noticed that the employees laughed at us after we had payed a horribly large amount. Don't mind paying a big amount, but do not like a lack of respect when we were being 100% respectful and speaking as much Spanish as we could. Just a bit disappointed in the service and how we were treated.

The people there hate tourists, especially foreigners. They ruined our experience after refusing use of their restroom after a long bus ride to the campground where the trail begins. The views on the mountain are great, but the people are an embarrassment to the park and the country of Argentina. I agree with Marta K's review... It seems they have a bored habit of being terrible hosts.

After driving from El Calafate to a crossroad about 40 Kms away from Perito Moreno, there's a sign Campo La Roca. From there the road is no more cemented. You gotta drive along the lake and my advice is to stop-off many times to enjoy the scenery. There are cows, horses, serenely drinking the milky water of the lake. By clear weather, do not miss the view of a far away Perito Moreno: wonderful.

We spent about five happy hours driving out to Lago Roca, with fun stops to see sheep being moved, watch guanacos, and take zillions of pictures. The campground at Lago Roca is really alluring and we wandered down to the lake with its glorious views. You can go out by the Glaciars road and back to El Calafate via the back gravel roads to make a circuit.

Everything is expensive...but everything is worth it. Unique views. Respect for tourists. Each excursion is unique. In Chaltén the walks are from another world 🌎...but if you are old, be careful when choosing them
