Cruising the lake is a fantastic way to visit three or more glaciers where they enter the lake, calving fairly large icebergs which can be viewed as close as 200 meters. The boat is comfortable, with a bar and food service. Excellent tour for people with limited mobility. The technical discourses by the tour guides were very well done (geology, climatology, etc). Highly recommended.

Lago Argentino is the most beautiful place I have seen in my life. Taking a tour with Marpatag, the boat took me through different parts of the lakes and allowed me to marvel at the water, mountains, and glaciers. Comparing this to Canada and Norway, it still ranks number one in my opinion. There was a crack from the near-by glacier a few days before I visited and I had an opportunity to see multiple floating blue ices on the emerald green water (as it is a cloudy day; otherwise, it is supposed to be light blue in the sun)

The lake in many ways centers El Calafate which arose on its eastern side. The dry sparse vegetation one side , the towering peaks of the snow capped Patagonia Ice Fields to the West. Near the city side is a large walk around path which many bird species are visible especially so in early part of morning.

Lago Argentino was magnificent! A stunning location, awesome scenery and great place to enjoy. Having stopped to enjoy a brief look at Lago Argentino en-route to visit Perito Moreno Glacier the day before we returned on foot from our hotel just a short distance away the following morning. The sun was shining, air as fresh as it comes and the sky was a beautiful shade of blue.
We were followed almost the entire way by a dog that seemed to enjoy the walk as much as we did. That is until he decided to join a group of people photographing each other next to the large El Calafate sign!
Time permitting we would have happily spent more time walking or sitting simply taking in the views and relaxing environment.

Beautiful blue lake about 90 km in length you will notice right at landing at El Calafate airport. It's breath taking view is unforgettable. Blue color is due to turquoise.

It is hard to comprehend the scale of the lake. Just take in segments, go on a glacier trip to Peito Moreno or Est Christina. Go to the nature reserve in El Calafate to see the wildlife. Quite a lake.

Lago Argentino is the largest body of fresh water in Argentina. Baptized by Francisco Perito Moreno, this lake is situated in the Santa Cruz Province, and its closest town is Calafate. The lake is part of Los Glaciares National Park, from where numerous glaciers and rivers feed this seemingly endless lake.
The main attractions around the lake included boat navigations to some of the many glacier fronts. Perito Moreno and Upsala glaciers were among the very favorites and most accessible. Other activities included fishing in the lake and Santa Cruz River, ice trekking on Perito Moreno, horseback riding, and for the more adventurous there is one company doing kite-surfing in the bay in front of town!
On the south shore of the Lake is the picturesque town of Calafate. Here you will find on the main street a wide variety of culinary options, bars, handicraft shops, ice-cream vendors and local chocolate stores. Calafate is a fun town that has plenty of touristy alternatives to enjoy.
Keep in mind that most stores closes for lunch and then reopened until quite late at night. Remember that Argentina is famous for their steaks and sweet “alfajores”, you won´t be sorry! Money exchange and ATM´s are found on the main street also, although most stores accept credit cards. Overall this was a great trip and I recommend this to anyone!

This is a beautiful lake on the side of El Calafate. It's just a five minute walk from the center of town, and you can see it very easily. My friends and I did the stroll around the side of the lake the first day we got there (we arrived too late to go on an excursion but too early to not do anything). It was windy, relaxing, and enjoyable. If you are wondering what to do with a couple extra minutes, I'd recommend walking around the lake. You can even see a bunch of flamingos.

We enjoyed a cruise around this this beautiful lake offered by Marpateg. Freely floating icebergs to your left and to your right. Naturally cascading waterfalls from glaciers flowing into Lago Argentino. The water is so pure and the air so clean.when you breathe deep, it is an amazing sensation especially after spending 6 days in Buenos Aires where the air is filled exhaustion from so many cars in such a small place.

Great place to walk or cycle around Lago Argentina.
There are a few stray dogs, not to worry they seem harmless.
There are a some cafes along the way to choose from.
The highlight was the flamingos with the stunning backdrop of mountains and the crystal clear tortoise water.
Enjoy.

- Estancia Cristina: Hay 3 opciones.

Buena suerte!!

Wondering where you stayed and which cruise company you used. What time of year did you go?
Written 27 August 2016
Hi Diane
My trip to Patagonia was the first 3 weeks of January. We could not have asked for nicer weather. Clear skies and daytime temps 55-60 degrees. It was shirt and short sleeves all day long.
In El Calafate we stayed at the Xelena hotel it is a bit out of town so you need a 5 minute cab ride to get to the action. The hotel is ok and met our needs.
I can't tell you the name of the "cruise " company but it is the boat that takes you to Estancia Cristinia which I would recommend VERY highly. You can make it a day trip or stay over at the Estancia. It is an 100 year old ranch which reverted back to the govt after the last heir to the lease died. The food is great, accomadations are cabins with bathrooms and it has hiking, glaciers, horseback riding and a fossil valley.
I hope this helps. BTW there is a great cruise to Cape Horn from Ushusia. If you have any other questions let me know. Have a great trip.
Alan
