After 5 wonderful weeks in Argentina and beautiful experiences with it’s citizens, parks and museums, this was by far the worst customer service experience. While we enjoyed the museum and learned a great deal, the young man working there was arrogant, rude and simply disrespectful. He is a terrible public face for the museum and does a disservice to it’s mission of science, history and cultural education. It saddens me to have to write such a harsh review for a facility with such a noble cause.

We were not able to visit because they decided not to open the morning we went. This is the response we got when called after returning to our hotel. This was our last morning in El Calafate. So we recommend booking in advance and calling to ensure they are open.

Although it's a bit far from the city center, it's worthy to visit if you want to have an idea of the rich history of this region. The museum has a timeline that accompanies you through all the rooms. It begins with an exposition of different kind of dinosaurs found in Patagonia and rebuilt by scientists. Then, it explains how human beings arrived to this remote place and what they left that let archaeologists and paleontologists know about their habits. Besides it tells how European colonized/invaded the place and treated native people as animals, a shameful history that unfortunately happened not only in Argentina but all along Latinamerica. The last room displays a collection of photos of native people and their sad stories, a wonderful reflection to appraise our American roots that make us different from the rest of the world.

Excellent overview of Patagonia's origins which also manages to be right up to date.
Friendly and helpful assistance, with a taste of Yerba and Calafate liquor to complete the treat.

The 3D exhibits are excellent with a great detailed explanation about Earth ice ages.
Coming out of the exhibit take 30 minutes and enter the Glaciarium, an ice bar with -10C. When you walk in they will give you a special thermo overcoat and a container made out of ice so you can drink all the vodka you can take in 20 minutes. Great place for the whole family. There is a photographer inside the bar to take great pictures. Because the room is all ice and all the ice sculptures photography is a little tricky so it is better to have a photo taken by a professional. There is music inside and only 25 people at the time are allowed inside for 20 minutes. Great fun, highly recommended.

This museum is tiny and off the tourist path, but it is a must visit! My husband and I visited this museum last month on a Sunday. The last admission was at 7 pm and we went here after visiting Laguna Nimez. It is close by. The woman at the front desk didn't speak English but was extremely helpful and sweet and waited till we finished to close up. They give you a printed copy of the English translation of all the Spanish boards inside. We were mesmerized by all that Patagonian history! The dinosaurs, other exotic animals and the evolution of the geography of Patagonia. We had visited the Milodon cave in Chilean Patagonia, so we got to know more about this giant sloth. We were fascinated to learn about the early people who lived in Patagonia: Aonikenks and the mapuches. It broke our hearts to read about the atrocities and inhuman treatment meted out to them by European settlers and so-called civilized people. Seems like being inhuman is a human trademark. I wish we had more time at the museum but it was already closing time and we didn't want to keep the sweet staff waiting. All in all, it was a very insightful little museum and it made me go home and read up more about Patagonia.

If you have some spare time it is Interesting to visit a little museum dedicated to the dinosaures recently discoverd in the Region of El Calafate. To get there you can walk along the Laguna Nimez Reserve and take the opportunity to do some bird watching. A little fee is due and at the end of the visit the lady will offer you a cup of tea or mate.

It is a private effort, and seems very serious with the information given. Good to spend an hour, with good information about geological evolution in Patagonia and indian tribes.
