- KevinMountain View, California284 contributionsVery challenging, but has some great views of Phoenix at the top.If you hike Camelback Mountain, go in the early morning (like around sunrise) if you can to avoid the heat. I started at the Echo Canyon Trailhead and unfortunately got a later start than I wanted to...if I came at sunrise I would've avoided the heat and would've gotten shade from the mountain. You will be bouldering for a lot of this hike, and sometimes it can be hard to distinguish where the path is. Be ready to use your hands climbing up and down, as you will need them. It is definitely not an easy hike, but the views are outstanding. It took me about 1 hour 20 min to climb up, and about the same time to climb down (I had to go more slow climbing down as my knees were still sore from a previous strenuous hike at the Grand Canyon from several days before). Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat/sunglasses, along with snacks.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 29 September 2023

Search [Nikko Gandia Camelback Mountain Trail Guide]. Blog post version is linked the video's description! Parking fills up fast, snagged a spot by starting later in the day. Facilities available at trailhead-water, restrooms, shade canopy, & benches. Bring enough water for the heat & inclines! Steep inclines/technical scrambles at the midway point for about a 10th of a mile & during the last quarter of a mile of the summit. 360 views are awesome.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 3 December 2023
- Afshin FWoodbury, Minnesota2 contributionsOnce in Lifetime ExperienceDefinitely challenging and rewarding! It was very useful to have read the reviews before heading out as the parking was definitely a challenge (Lyft worked well, as I went up on Echo trail and came down on Cholla. 2.5 hr round trip)Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 January 2024
- jsreinitzWaterloo, Iowa24 contributionsGood exercise, great viewsStarted shortly after sunrise on the Echo Trail. Cool temps, busy trail. Strenuous hike with rewarding views. - Conny WylieOttawa, Canada993 contributionsSuch An Arizona Hiking Destination.Camelback Mountain, ( 2700 ft.), is a perfect tourist activity in Phoenix as it is a relatively short jaunt with pleasurable views. On the base of the mountain at 6 A. M., half asleep, armed with trial mix, water, coffee and climbing boots, I opted for the Echo Trail. It was challenging .......like tackling a stair-master and I was soon sweating like mad. I spotted prickly pear cacti along the mountain side and as I forged up, I heard the rattle of a diamond back. I remained quiet for a while and edged down the slope to circumvent the reptile and continue on my way up. Over an hour from embarkation I reached the top and extended my arms in a 'Jesus on the cross' figure to enjoy the balminess of the wind. Coming down seemed a breeze. Camelback Mountain is such an Arizona hiking destination.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 1 April 2024
- annikaBaltimore, Maryland17 contributionsVery difficult but worth the 360° view!Stunning view but only for experienced hikers! We were very excited to climb camelback mountain but soon realized that the hike is extremely difficult. Not all sources online really say, that you do need some kind of experience and you should be in good shape in order to successfully climb the mountain. We saw many people on the side of the trail having heat strokes or just heat exhaustion, because many of them underestimated the hike. It is extremely steep and it’s more climbing than hiking. The parking situation is very frustrating. Not enough parking opportunities for all the people visiting. We ended up parking at the Marriotts Resort parking lot and walked 15 min to the trailhead.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 April 2024
- Rita SCuba, Missouri26 contributionsSpectacular viewsThe views on these mountain trails are absolutely breathtaking, but the climb itself is a tough one! If you are planning on climbing (especially during extreme temperatures) make sure you are prepared with plenty of water, sunscreen, good hiking shoes, and a light snack. The trip down is just as rigorous as the climb up! We took several breaks so we could enjoy the spectacular views and took a lot of photos! It was definitely a great and exhausting experience!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 August 2024
- Claudia IGlendale, Arizona104 contributionsA must doThis is the most rewarding hike in the Phoenix area! The views from the top are worth the effort. However, word to the wise: put on some good shoes, it’s slippery in many parts if it rains. Also there’s no reason to go hike there during the hot summer months no matter how much water you bring along: don’t underestimate the Phoenix heat. I saw many families with kids so technically anyone can complete this hike. However I’ve also seen many people turning around. Know your limitations because it might take a while for help to arrive! Will definitely return!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 August 2024

I hiked the Cholla Trail in February. The weather was great and so were the views. Lots of bouldering - particularly near the top, so take your time, wear the correct shoes and know when to turn around if you are not comfortable. Remember that you are in the desert- so take water. There were many people on the trail on this particularly Sunday afternoon, so getting lost was not really an option. A great hike (I've done it twice now) that I always recommend to anyone traveling to the area.

This is a pretty challenging hike for those who are not frequent hikers. Don't come to Camelback in flip-flops with no water.
This is a popular hike, so parking can be an issue. Come very early or during the week to lessen that issue.
This isn't a casual walk up to an overlook, this is a steep and challenging hike with some rock scrambles. Come with good hiking footwear, plenty of water, and sun protection. The top is a great place to stop for a snack (along with everyone else). If you want an extra challenge, go up one side, down the other, then back over to your starting point. I was headed up to the top for my second time that hike feeling all bad-ass when a man who looked to be in his 60s who had just passed answered someone's question that this was his fourth time headed up that day. I hope I am that fit when I am his age.

We took the Cholla route up from the Phoenician Hotel. It is a great hike but demanding. You can do it in running/tennis shoes, but I'd recommend hiking boots/shoes. The footing is tricky & you need to be careful going up & down frequently. We made it to the helipad, which took about 1.25 hours & we had to return back down b/c we ran out of time. We were told that it would take another 15 to 20 minutes to complete the trail to the top AND that it is more demanding. So, it is a solid 3hrs to get to the top & back from the hotel. I would recommend this hike!

We took this hike with our two kids and we all made it to the top! We definitely took our time and went early in the morning so it wasn't too hot. We had a overcast day which definitely helped. Also get there early to get parking. As we were going back down the mountain you could tell how many more people had arrived. It's not easy but the views at the top are definitely worth it!

My wife and I took a long weekend trip to Phoenix and had Camelback Mountain on our list for weeks leading into the trip. I had hiked in Sedona and Flagstaff before, but she had never been to AZ before. I wasn’t sure how difficult it would be, but we were excited either way. We chose the Echo Canyon Trailhead because it seemed to be higher rated. We came on a Saturday at around 11am and the parking lot was very busy. We were fortunate enough to get a parking spot right as someone else pulled out. There is a bathroom right at the beginning of the trail head which was very nice. We started the hike and I must admit it was easier than I expected. I would consider my wife and I to be in good shape. As the hike went on, it got progressively harder. There were some steep ascents that you needed a railing for. The most challenging part of this hike is your footwork. There are so many rocks that you have to constantly choose where to put your feet. It adds a fun mental challenge to the hike. This is even more challenging on the way down. You can definitely slip if you are not careful. We made it to the top in about 1.5 or 2 hours with a few water breaks along the way. The view is incredible. You can see all of the valley area. The climb down is actually the hardest part because choosing your footing and potential to slip. Overall, this is a must-do if you are in the Phoenix area.

The hike itself was awesome. Challenging with significant vertical elevation change, but a feeling of accomplishment when completed. You do need to be in pretty good shape. We started at about 5:30 and used flashlights in the beginning. This allowed us to find a parking spot and view the sunrise from the mountain top.
Negatives - Difficult to find parking. Crowded and not many masks in these times of Covid.
Positives - Great challenging hike. Excellent views from the top.

If you are moderately active, you can climb this mountain. I would not recommend this for the inexperienced hiker/climber or for someone in average shape...you must be able to climb some significant boulders.
As well, the trails can be slippery so you must have good shoes and balance. All that aside, the climb is great and the views are magnificent from everywhere. Be sure to bring plenty of water if you are going to climb on a sunny/warm day.
The biggest downside to Camelback is the parking...it is very limited and you must get there early.

My sister and I hiked the Echo Canyon Trail to the top of Camelback in February. The weather was absolutely perfect - not too hot at all. It took us three hours total to go up and back, including some time at the top to rest and eat a snack.
When we arrived at 8:00 a.m., the sign at the parking lot said "Lot Full", but the ranger moved it about a minute later and let us and several more cars in. I would suggest arriving very early, or be patient and you will get a spot. Taking an Uber is a good option as well.
The trail was quite busy, but it was not a problem. We frequently let others pass us. Wear hiking boots (not tennis shoes or sandals). Hiking poles would do you no good at all, as you need your hands frequently to get over rocks or to hold onto the railing.
Take plenty of water and salty snacks. Even though it is a short trail, it is difficult, and it almost certainly will take longer than you think.
The trail is quite steep, and most of it is very rocky, but I did it without really any problems. I'm a 50-something woman, in fairly decent shape, and I'm still a little sore two days later. But I'd happily do this hike again when back in the area.

Echo Canyon Trailhead is only 5’ away from Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa. We went early 7:30am and plenty parking available. It is rated difficult trail with rough climbing. The view was rewarding at top, even at half way. On our way down, too many people climb up. People take turns at narrow points.

I'm an avid hiker doing Himilaya, European Alps, Rockies etc... and this one is a intense short hike. After 5 day of hiking in Sedona, this was supposed to be a wind down but it sure wasn't . It was 68 degrees and i was sweating like a dog and panting. So i can't imagine doing this at 80s or even 100 degrees weather. Did the classic Echo trail which is harder than other side. Go early or no parking
It's fun and mentally challenging. You need to look for a path of least resistance. It's a BOULDER Scramble not a hike. Good to have high cut hiking boots and your hands free so don't carry a water bottle in you hand. Actually saw someone with high heels. Prob didn't make it. Didn't see any kids make it.
It took 3 hrs including rest a top. Thought i could do it in 2 hrs but it was tough and what's the rush. Saw on youtube some guy can run up it in 19 mins.
Once at the top have a snack and enjoy the views
Coming down was just as hard in a diff aspect. Killer on knees and ankle and upper body as you had to use arms on boulders to lift yourself to next step.
All in all it was fun and challenging. Just take your time esp if no time constraints and slowly make it up there. Another hike off my bucket list.

Visiting Phoenix for a few days in April to attend a wedding. I will be alone but want to do some hiking. What would be best trails, safe, and easily accessible from town via Uber?
Written 12 February 2020
Camelback, Piestowa peak (there are also a lot of other trail at the base of piestowa). I suggest hiking shoes both are great climbs to do alone always other people around and they are well maintained. Enjoy

Hi, I am a deaf guy from India. I know English. Would it be safe for me to trek Camelback mountain on my own? Are there markers to guide trekkers to the top and back? Can I expect any help from other trekkers/security guys, etc? I plan to trek this Tuesday.

Hello, bring a lot of water. Espacialy if you got during the heat peak of the day. Do not go off the trail. In my opinion, Echo trail is ''safer''. Take your time and it's going to be fine. Also bring some snacks to give you energy.

Hello, how long is the hike? If we only have 2-3 hours is it doable? Average hikers. Thanks!
Written 26 May 2019
If you go up and down from the Echo Canyon trailhead, you can definitely do it in 2-3 hours. If you do the whole length from Echo Canyon to Cholla trailhead or vice versa and have to get an Uber or walk back to your car, maybe not.

What's the average temperature during Camelback hike in August?
Written 31 August 2018
It depends on the time of day! It can be 114 degrees at 1 PM. Best to hike VERY early in the AM and bring more water than you think you need. Lately the average temp has been 104.
Written 31 August 2018
yes there are at the trail start but nothing after that, that is the same for 90% of the trails we have done in Arizona and California.

Is hiking Camelback in early July, this weekend in fact doable with the temps? Starting at sunrise?
Written 30 June 2017
It is probably doable any time of year or day given you are in shape and you prepare properly. In shape- are you used to walking longer distances, relatively strong legs and do you have good balance? Properly prepared- wear, hat, long sleeve shirt, decent shoes (trail runner types), lots of water(2 liters ideal), something for energy(energy bars, fruit, etc), and sun screen. Maybe even a badana that you can wet and tie around you neck for additional cooling.
That said- sunrise will be a great time to climb camelback! Have fun and post pictures!! :-)
