This hike was not very challenging until you get to the cave. I think the entire trail itself is about 6 miles however we did not go to the end of Boynton Trail. We hiked about 2 miles then turned off the trail to get to Subway Cave. We followed a few other hikers up there however there is a large arrow with Subway Cave carved into a rock left by other hikers to show the way so cannot miss it. From there it is about a half mile until the cave and the ruins. Really cool spot to see the cave and the only challenging part of the hike was figuring out the way up to the cave. There are two ways to get up one is a narrow and slide like looking (which is how I got down) and the other is a small climb up some rocks and shuffling across a narrow path. The second option to get up is also where the ruins are with some carvings on the wall which I heard was left by a tribe! Very cool view and definitely would recommend this hike as it is not very challenging and can be done with kids as well.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 November 2023

There are some steep areas where you will need to climb over rocks, but not strenuous. Once you reach the vista, it is very beautiful. Some say that the energy is felt from the vortex; however, we did not feel anything. It did not deter us from enjoying the beautiful views. We went early in the morning during the week and there were many parking spots available. Additionally, there is a restroom onsite. One last thing, there are signs for black bears, however, we did not come across any.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 December 2023

Most think that easy hikes because of relatively not 10+ slope os un true. You are climbing from 5600ft to 7400ft Bring water and protein snacks. Most do not bring enough water I recommend electrolyte powder that you can add to water if needed. This HELPS HUGE. This trail once up to the shoot and the plateau it is fabulous view. We stopped many times along the way to get some great shots and tracked some bear tracks. 7 out of 10 hike Great spotVisited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 January 2024
- Deb CCarver, Minnesota111 contributionsMy Favorite hike in Sedona!Incredible! It snow the night before we hiked and everything was just gorgeous. We were so fortunate to have a totally sunny morning. Most of the trail was snow covered on the way out, and what wasn't was wet but not muddy. The Boyton Canyon trail was fairly easy and the 1/2 mile spur to the cave was too, BUT climbing up into the cave was challenging, especially with wet rocks! Two couples did not even try. Once you get up you are at the back of the cave. When you turn around you have the most incredible view, even more so with the snow I think! I am so glad we did not miss it! Getting down was more difficult than getting up. My husband went down before me and help me or I don't think I could have done it. When we got down we found out we could have walk around a very narrow ledge to the ruins and come down a rocky trail! By the time we headed back it had clouded up and the much of the snow had melted, making the trail more slushy.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 February 2024
- Lauren DFort Worth, Texas1 contributionWhat an invigorating walkWhat an invigorating walk. I came here so I wouldn't be stressed by the rush of common tourist attractions, and that's exactly what I got. Great guides to guide us, as there are certain points on the walk where you don't know which way to go. lol I didn't take a photo to show the landscape because I wanted to relax. But it's very worth it.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 21 February 2024

Honestly, all the trails in Sedona are fantastic! If you are looking for a long easy hike with shade and forest, this would be the hike for you.
My friend and I specifically chose to hike on a weekday (Thursday to be exact) to avoid the crowds. It so happened the few days we were in Sedona it was well into the 90's in temperature. We got to the trailhead, which to keep in mind you pay a parking fee. The lot was full but we managed to find spots to park around the corner. Trail signage was very clear, lots of shade so the heat was not bad, though bring water and a snack, it is about 7-8 miles round trip. Beautiful views.
It's a great hike!

Views are spectacular. Trail is pretty tough on the body. A little disappointing that there is a resort and some large homes in the middle of the canyon at the beginning with some construction happening, so you can hear resort noise and construction noise which takes away from the ambiance. The “subway cave” is off of this trail, so lots of instagrammers looking to get the perfect shot on this trail. If you actually continue on the trail to the end, it is quite rigorous at the end with large rocks and a very steep hike to the top. Parking was a little bit if a challenge as we arrived by 8 am and the lot was already full.

I went alone and have little hiking experience. I went to the top of the red rock vista and it wasn't that difficult but so worth the view. The flute playing man that hands out heart shaped rocks was there and he is just amazing. Look out for him if you go. This was one of the most liberating things I did in Sedona. I recommend stepping out of your comfort zone.

We hiked this trail on a Saturday morning at 8 am. I would suggest starting even earlier. We parked about a quarter mile down the road from the trailhead but cars were parked much further when we returned at 11:30. It is a little further from town than devils bridge which is insanely crowded. The trail is mostly easy-ish with a few rocky inclines. Lots of shade along the way as well as scenic views. The summit is amazing but quite a climb at the end. Hint: lots of people scale up the smooth rock to get to the top but its much less strenuous/dangerous to climb the rocky trail to the left as well as come down that way. Im 58 and not in the greatest shape but really enjoyed this hike. Especially the views at the top - worth the trip!

Moderate length and difficulty in a slot canyon. Only downside is the first 2/3 mile is adjacent to Enchantment resort with loud construction currently. The vista at the end is a supposed vortex. Honestly I did not feel any additional spiritual presence. When I am on a beautiful hike I am always happy, at peace and usually spiritually fulfilled. Didn’t really notice any difference. Regardless this is a great hike

This is one of Sedona’s most popular trails, if not the most popular. I would suggest going early around 7am to beat the crowds. The views at the end are incredible. Subway Cave is off of the beaten path and not marked. Due to its popularity, it’s pretty easy to follow. You will see an open area with logs. I missed it on the way, but found it about a mile back from the end of the trail. The end of the trail was quiet with no other hikers, but the cave was pretty busy even early in the morning. I mapped it in AllTrails and it was about 8 miles out and back. Worth the views!!

Boynton Canyon Trail is approximately 7.5m RT if you include the Vista Trail and Subway Cave spur trails, both of which to me are a must!
Trailhead Parking is on Canyon Rd, near the intersection with Boynton Pass Road. If the parking lot is full, there’s overflow parking on Boynton Pass Road.
The trail goes through a canyon in the Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness. Along the trail, there are 2 short detours. At approximately 0.3m from the trailhead, you can take the first detour to the Boynton Canyon Vista Trail (0.4m RT), for stunning views with little effort. You can do this at the beginning or the end of your hike. We opted for the beginning, just in case we were too tired on the way back and tempted to skip it. Allow about a half hour for this first detour.
The first mile or so through Boynton Canyon was a bit disappointing because to the left all you can see is the resort, and at the time of our visit, there was construction work done and the equipment was making a lot of noise (hence the 4 stars). To the right though, beautiful cliffs.
At approximately 2.4m you reach the trail to the Subway Cave (or 2.0m if you skipped the Boynton Vista Trail). There is no sign marking the trail to the cave. As you approach the 2.0m/2.4m mark, be alert for a big distinctive tree (differs from the other trees around it) on the left hand side. Once you get to the tree, take the narrower trail to the right. To get up into the cave, you walk/rock scramble up the sandstone incline. I personally skipped this part, and sat on the ledge and enjoyed the amazing views from up there. But I did venture across, up to the caves on the other side, also with amazing views (but without having to walk on the narrow ledge).
Once back on the Boynton Canyon Trail, turn right to continue to the end of Boynton Canyon. From here, it is just over 1.0m to get to the end of the trail, but keep in mind the last half-mile is the steepest.
A highly recommended trail, but don’t skip the Vista Trail and the Subway Cave.

This is a great hike. Not so little as it has bit of elevation change but the views are worth the hike. I recommend going early in the day to avoid crowds. Nobody going up at 8:30am and 30 folks on way down..Some switchbacks. Take a pano photo at the top!

Howdy. Does anyone know if the trail is accessible outside Enchantment Resort? I’ve hiked the trail before but we stayed in the resort so I don’t know if there is a trailhead for nonguests. Thank you.

The trail the goes along the side of Enchantments is the Boynton Canyon Trail. If you were looking for the Kachina area, it is called the Vista Trail which if off of the BCT. Park in the parking lot on the right just before Enchantments, take the Boynton Canyon trail which will ver off to the left after crossing a dry creek bed. About 5 minutes later the Vista trail will go off of BCT to the right. Be sure to have your water and always good to have a map or take a photo of one on your phone at the trail head map sign. Enjoy

If you go there during a national holiday, there is no fee to park. The same is true for any national park. However, the airport mesa parking fee will still be $3.00 no matter what day you go.

No you don't and sorry just seeing this now...you've probably already hiked and gone peace on...

How is the road getting there? Is it all paved and easy to park at the trail entrance?
Written 28 April 2017
As others have said, roads to the trail head are paved and totally accessible. We couldn't find parking in the car park at the trail head but parked on the roadside about 100m away from the car park turn off. The road is signposted where you can and cannot park on the side.

I have a group of 60 people. Do we need to make any specials arrangements to hike this trail? How long does it take and how difficult is the hike.
Written 6 August 2016
You would enjoy it, but it would be hard to get 60 people at the top to see it's incredible review.

I would like to go on the longer tour with myself and daughter but am concerned if the longer ride would be too much for a novice rider. We have both ridden before but only a few times.
Written 25 October 2015
Mountain biking most of the trails in Sedona are difficult, especially for a novice rider. If you are staying at Enchantment, I highly recommend inquiring about their hike and bike program. They have a wonderful biking guide by the name of George. He is very experienced and would be a great person to have guide you on a tour that meets your needs.
