My wife and I were looking for a close encounter with the lava flows and were so glad we choose Poke A Stick to take us to the action. Cheryl was great to communicate with to setup the tour and Christy our guide was amazing. After a 2.5 mile hike into the fields she put us right on the active... More

Christie our guide was great. Cheryl, the owner answered all emails and calls quickly. She even called me to let me know there were surface flows again before we arrived in Hilo. Loved this tour of hiking on lava and reaching flowing lava. 4 hour hike was fairly easy. Cheryl was good to accomodate our time. Would highly recommend this... More

This hike was an awesome experience thanks to our guides Cheryl and Jerry. It is a little unnerving getting to the meeting place, as you have to drive through myriad of bike rentals and a guard, but this is indeed the way to Cheryl's, as directed. Here are some highlights/things of note: -the lava hike is like walking on silica... More

Cheryl and Jerry took us on an amazing 6 mile behind the scenes tour of the devastation created by lava. As part of this tour, we got to see lave close up. Cheryl also gave us some background on what the area was like prior to the lava devastation. We started hiking around 3:30 pm and finished around 8:30. What... More

Cheryl and Scott (owners/guides) made sure we got to see and experience the lava to its full effect. We all felt super safe, we hike at a reasonable pace, and the trip was a blast! One of the coolest things I've ever done! I would definitely recommend Poke A Stick to anyone considering visiting the lava. I had been out... More

This hike was one of the coolest things I have done on my many travels! Our guide was Christie and she was just amazing. Our hike to the lava flow was about 6 miles round trip through the lava fields. Once we reached a flow area, it was amazing to see how the lava came out of the ground and... More

I called to arrange a tour with Cheryl, we booked the tour and then realized that there had been a miscommunication of dates. Cheryl didn't have a tour planned for the date I thought we had discussed, but she pulled one together last minute so that she could honor our reservation. We had a great time and really appreciated her... More

I spoke to Cheryl at least three times to work out our 7 am hike reservation, after a verbal confirmaiton I did not receive an email confirmation. The night before we got up at 4:30 am to drive to Hilo I called Cheryl to confirm our details. She said the hike was canceled, there was no lava flow...but if we... More

You'll have to be prepared to do a 2-hour walk through the rainforest. It's muddy and slippery in spots but it's worth it once you get to the lava flow. Going to the area where lava flows like a raging river isn't allowed. So the tour guides take you to the lava fields (a burnt wasteland that looks like it's... More

I will remember this trip for my whole life. You get to experience a place so completely different from anything you're used to and get to witness something that we all know about, but seems otherworldly in person. It's definitely not for everybody, as you have to hike over lots of lava rock to get to the hot lava, but... More
