Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a beautiful hike through varied landscape and past many secluded beaches. We found the water to be a bit rough for swimming and also too warm (in March). The climate was also very hot and muggy and that prevented us from going as far as we would have liked. I guess that you could get to San Josecito beach in 2 - 3 hours in cooler weather, but in that heat it was going to take us a lot longer and we were going to die of the heat! Take lots of water and electrolytes with you. We did pass the occasional place that possibly had refreshments and possibly had a toilet, but for the most part, you are on your own.

People say this hike takes about 2,5 - 3 hours per direction. If you take in the beautiful nature along the way, I agree. For me it was getting dark on the way back so I didn't really take my time, but still didn't hurry. It took me only about two hours. But the reason I was running late was because on my way to the last beach I stopped so many times and enjoyed my surroundings! Monkeys, birds, trees, palm trees and one beach more beautiful than the other. Once I had passed the first bit where still some accommodations are, I hardly met any other person. This might be due to the decline in tourism during Covid.
All together an awesome and also cheap way to enjoy the nature of coastal Costa Rica. If you are fit enough, take the time to enjoy this hike!

Hiked about 20 minutes past Cocalito and then turned back to there because it was the best one. Soft sand and big but not too big waves to play in. We had been to San Josecito as part of the snorkel tour the day before and knew it wasn’t worth walking back.

Went from boat drop off at playa San Josecito back toward Drake bay. One beach after another, most empty or just a few other humans soaking up the sun and lovely blue water. We loved poking through the tidal pools, lots of critters, and a troop of capuchin.

I did the entire 20km from Drake Pura Vida hostel to San Jocito Beach and back.
PROs: free
CONs: in-and-out trail, not much to see, little animals (unlike Manuel Antonio), only one distance marker at the beginning, no stops/shops/toilets passed Cocalito Beach

This is a free hike that you can do from Drake Bay to San pedrillo. The trail is very muddy and you have to pass many rivers.
We got to San Josecito beach and went back. In the trail you are completely alone with nature and your can see a lot of animals is you go quiet and careful.

Good hiking shoes suggested as trail often is muddy in parts. Rather well marked. Nice to walk on one's own. Several fine beaches some with fresh water showers. We ran into a monkey colony that took no notice of us.

Awesome trail to hike !!!
We parked in Drake Bay and started walking.
Careful at the beginning of the path, the indications are not the best but if you use a GPS app that is better than following the signs!
But after you just enjoy and enjoy and enjoy !!
The path is really beautiful and every 10 minutes you find a new small beautiful beach. We were there mid-march and there was no one so we could have stayed longer on every beach.
For information, before reaching playa San Josecito, you have to cross water that can be a bit deep.
We walked until playa San Josecito. There we enjoyed a moment and to come back we just took one the boat that are there for people who went snorkkeling.
So not the most famous hike and not advertised but definitely a hidden gem in this country that has so many !!

It was amazing, the views, the nature and the atmosphere.
I went by my own and it was go and safe.
The only problem was that the trail is not clear in some places so it was not so easy sometimes.
The best and safe ( because of the tide) is to go on the trail in the morning.
It’s combination of trail, nature, sea & swimming.

Does any one know if you are allowed to ride a mountain bike on this trail?

We are headed to CR in a couple of weeks and spending some time in Osa. We’d love to hike this trail but don’t want to have to pack hiking shoes! Would boat shoes be ok?I understand it’ll probably be muddy in some areas but aside from that, is the trail so rough that we should have hiking shoes? Thank you!

You don't need hiking boots. Just was there in Mid Jan and wore everything from boat shoes, keens to regular gym shoes. Hiked it most every day for a week. Life Is Good
