About
Natural History Museum of Meteora and Mushroom Museum is located in the city of Kalambaka, very close to Meteora. Essentially, there are two museums housed in a building of 1100 m2 that host two permanent collections: The first one is about animals and contains approximately 350 species of mammals and birds, while the second one is about mushrooms and contains approximately 250 species of mushrooms. The collection of animals consists of high quality embalmed birds and mammals, made by Europe's best taxidermists, while some of them are very rare. The mushroom collection consists of handmade mushroom sculptures maintaining the similarity of colors, shapes and size. They are presented in three stages of development, so that the visitor forms a complete picture of mushroom's life circle. The sculptures were created one by one by high skilled sculptors of the wider local region. However, it is not just the quality of the exhibits that makes our Museum great, but also the way of presentation, which is very unique for greek standards and it can be compared with other similar european museums. Animals and mushrooms are presented into dioramas which depict exactly the natural terrain where they live and grow into(i.e. woods, wetlands etc.). The result of the dioramas is magnificent and ravishing to both young and older visitors, a fact that is reflected daily in the guestbook of the Museum, as well as on our Facebook page. Phrases such as "wonderful representation", "theatrical scenery", "huge work of art", "pioneering effort", "unique effort" etc., are just few of the comments of our visitors. This is one of the reasons that during these few months of our operation, our Museum has often been the main theme for reportages by the majority of Greek media and social media, a fact which presumably indicates the value and the quality of the project. Also, as part of the effort to expand the Museum's activity, there is our Artspace with a permanent exhibition of paintings and sculptures of local artists. The artists explore projects similar to Museum's theme, connecting the natural and cultural heritage through their own artistic experience and way of expression. Finally, it is essential to be mentioned that the University of Athens, which is our official scientific advisor, supports the function of the museum as well as the provided information. It is obvious that our museum can satisfy the most demanding visitor with both its aesthetic and its provided information. Furthermore, your visit does not stop here! It continues to the Museum's cafe where you can enjoy your coffee enjoying the view of the rocks of Meteora and it ends at the Museum's souvenir shop where you have the opportunity to buy unique souvenirs, as well as a big variety of wild edible mushrooms of excellent quality, placed in a unique product packaging. These products of greek nature, having the logo and guarantee of the Museum, can be an ideal and a very tasty gift. Most of the mushrooms are collected from surrounding areas, which are famous not only for their mushroom quantity, but also for the quality. This is why, the Museum has compiled a list of activities related to mushrooms, which essentially constitutes a new touristic product and enriches uniquely the planned visit in the area of Meteora. These activities include seminars providing basic information about mushrooms, visits upon the mountain for mushroom picking, mushroom cooking, lunch or dinner with mushrooms accompanied by greek modern and traditional music and other activities that are listed more detailed in the relevant list which is at your disposal. In conclusion, one can understand that this is not an ordinary museum where everything is static. It is a museum with a special dynamic, trying to variously satisfy the requirements of its visitors. This is why visiting our Museum can be a unique experience.

- Matthew MVirginia Beach, Virginia118 contributionsInteresting findWe did the two day train trip from Athens and stopped in this museum during the second day before the trip back. The museum takes about an hour to make it through two floors. First floor is various taxidermy birds and small animals and and exhibits were done very well. The second floor is devoted to mushrooms and provides good information on various types. The gift shop is also located on the second floor where they have lots of mushroom related merchandise. Staff was really friendly and eager to help. For 6€ pp it was worth a visit.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 September 2023
- C S2 contributionsWonderful experience! Our family stopped at the museum when in the area to view the monasteries and it ended up being one of our main highlights! The staff is kind and highly knowledgeable, the exhibit is engaging and well curated, and the mushroom goodies in the gift shop made for some perfect souvenirs to take home to our friends. Our kids (ages 5&6) explored for a couple hours and still didn’t want to leave. Highly recommend!Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 September 2023
- G WToronto, Canada613 contributionsGreat little museumA great museum especially about the mushrooms. Can't say I ever thought about mushrooms before but will going forward. A great collection and very informative. They even give you a taste of some. Nice stop after visiting the monasteries. 6 euro entry feeVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 October 2023
- Ralitsa D2 contributionsDon't miss!A charming museum! The "jewellery" stuffed animals exhibited against the art background of their natural environment fascinated us. The mushroom museum on the second floor was extremely interesting with the information about so many different types of mushrooms and of course the way they were presented! Don't miss the shop with the friendly staff too and buy Julius Caesar's favorite dried mushrooms ;)!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 October 2023
- Marialena A3 contributionsIt's a must!Very interesting exhibits and a very spot-on and illuminating tour. The museum's guide was very good and helpful. Would definitely recommend it. At the end of the tour, you can visit the shop and choose from a wide variety of products from mushrooms to drink or eat to merch.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 November 2023
- Harry T1 contributionBattery-filling experienceThe whole experience was really battery-filling. The people who accompanied us in the truffle hunting were knowledgeable, more than keen to assist us with anything we needed and thumbs up to the cook who prepared an awesome meal for us. They also served wine and drinks which paired with the food. After that to wind down, we were offered a tour of the museum from a tour guide who really knew her stuff. Highly recommend it!Visited April 2024Travelled on businessWritten 12 April 2024
- Lemonitsa2011Athens, Greece783 contributionsUnexpectedly captivatingWe had some extra hours during our visit to the Meteora and decided to go to the Natural History Museum. once there, we decided to purchase the audio guide for 2€ and we are very glad we did. The information provided by the audio tour in congection to the collection of the Museum made for a very informative and interesting visit. The young employees of the Museum answered all our questions and more, proving to be not only exceptionally knowledgable but also extremely patient, polite and communicative. The Museum itself has two sections: one is dedicated to wildlife from various parts of the world, with a focus on birds. There is a special area dedicated to the wildlife of the Meteora region. The second section of the Museum is the Mushroom Museum which we also found interesting. Do not miss the Mushroom Museum gift shop, which among others, sells chocolates with mushrooms! we purchased one and we were intrigued by how well it tasted. I would budget 1-1.5 hours if you do the audio tour.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 April 2024

- Keila S5 contributionsA hidden gemPopped into the museum on my final morning in Meteora. Truly, a hidden gem, you come here for the incredible stones but this museum shows there is much more to the area, to Greece and to the world. Taxidermy was of the best quality I think I've ever seen and the display was beautiful. The mushroom museum also, absolutely wonderful and informative. Definitely pop in here!Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 11 June 2024

Pros: it had good informational displays, and a wide variety of animals. There were also some particularly funny displays such as a bird that looked perpetually surprised. And the gift shop was amazing, great selection of sweet and savory mushroom products and the logo looks great on stuff.
Cons: It’s fairly small and there’s nothing that really stands out as “amazing” or memorable. I’d not recommend going there if natural history museums aren’t your thing.
Overall it was very nice. 10/10 would recommend for anyone who enjoyed nature or natural history museums.

Very, very interesting museum. Nature is amazing and seeing all these different animals so close, you realize that once more. The paintings are more than beautiful, a big bravo to the artists !! We really enjoyed our time in the museum, also because of the very interesting information that we got from the staff about the mushrooms. Even the museumshop is a pleasure to visit and we are now enjoying the different mushroom pastas and chocolate that we bought. Thank you for showing the beauty and natural use of nature in many interesting ways !!

Great place. Very close to meteora! It's a two level museum. Level floor includes a variety of animals and info. First floor includes the mushroom exhibition with amazing info! It's quite unusual to see mushroom museums and it's really enjoyable to experience that. Very nice work on descriptions and information for rare mushrooms. Price is 5€ for adults and 4€ per child. Duration of the visit is approximately 1 hour.

We loved this modest and charming little museum which was a nice change of pace from all the monumental sightseeing. The dioramas were artfully done and informative and the mushroom museum was really eye-opening. But what made the experience exceptional was the enthusiasm, knowledgeability and friendliness of the staff. They offered lively explanations to our questions and added additional interesting trivia. Don’t miss the chance to engage them in any conversation about the displays. Also notable is the gift shop upstairs which offers an intriguing array of surprising culinary delights featuring mushrooms. The mushroom specialist upstairs recommended a delicious mushroom pasta and some truffle oil. Like he said, the truffle oil is great on fried eggs. For the adventurous: chocolate with mushrooms and herbs. Really fair prices for the quality and culinary innovation. Wow! What a fun experience—highly recommend!

This is a small well laid out museum consisting of well displayed “stuffed” animals and birds of the region along with a second floor mushroom museum. I have never heard of a mushroom museum and had no idea what to expect. The curators do an excellent job of creating artificial mushrooms from clay and wax. I used my phone based AI system and it correctly identified each mushroom so they are morphological correct. But equally importantly the mushrooms are well displayed in painted dioramas where they are found. It is not a museum for everyone but if you are at all interested in mushrooms you won’t find a better exhibit and it is well worth the hour of exploration. There is also an excellent mushroom gift shop with unique products

The nature museum was a perfect complement to our visit to the Meteora monasteries. It is a small museum, very well aranged and signed (including everything in English) and with a special focus on native wildlife.
The mushroom part (second floor) was especially fascinating and different from anything else we have seen. One of the museum personel (can't recall his name..) accompanied us through the exhibit and gave us much more information, answering many questions we had. Our children (17, 15, 11, 5) enjoyed it very much as well.
Highly recommended!
