Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The necropolis of Carmona is a very interesting area for everybody interested in history and traditions. When we were there, a flock of schoolkids with their teachers were there enacting old Roman rituals, and we saw them again in town, enthusiastic and playful with their spears and shields. What a great way to teach children about history and tradiitions. The graves of the necropolis are very varied, some small and shallow, others deep and grand. And the entrance is free.

Carmona is a stunning hilltop town just off the motorway between Córdoba and Seville. The old town is really beautiful with white houses built around the churches and historical buildings. Best time to visit is morning or late afternoon/early evening. During siesta nearly everything closes except a few restaurants and bars. In July heat was very intense over 40 degrees. We ate in a restaurant at the top of the town as there was a very welcome breeze. The museum closed during siesta but lovely place for drinks/snacks and very reasonably priced. Lots to see, really clean with good facilities. Very uncommercialised and we were amazed at how few tourists were there. If you are around Seville or Córdoba a wonderful place to visit.

Entry to the archaeological site and small museum of the ancient Roman necropolis is free for EU citizens! There is a circular mausoleum with a rectangular chamber cut into the rock below and accessed via a ladder! The chamber has niches cut into its walls to accommodate urns with cremated remains. There are plenty of other rock cut chamber tombs to look down at but the main event was a large open courtyard space surrounded originally with a double portico and with a pool at the centre. On one side of this court is a wide passageway and from the end of this a small passage with surviving fresco representations of the Fates, leads through to a circular chamber supported by four unusual diagonally positioned buttresses that carry the vault and terminate in a small oculus or opening in the middle of the vault. The marble statue of Servilla, now in the museum, was found here. The form of this tomb chamber and the large court arrangement are unusual in ancient Roman funerary architecture. The amphitheatre on the other side of the road to the necropolis entrance, is fairly ruined although the form is clearly visible. It is fenced off.

Go to the tourist office in the walls of the city and ask for the information on this and the other sites in the town. The ruins are well worth a visit as is it is worth climbing the tower by the tourist office - remember if you are over 60 Spain offers lots of discounts on attractions.

Don't miss the cinema, it is fantastic the way they bring the ruins to life. Well built museum. Take a drink with you on the bus trip as facilities on the hill are limited.

In southern Spain you can visit some of the most interesting Roman ruins in the world...this is an excellent example. The place is hard to find but you can ask at the tourist office. We visited it after lunch, which was a big mistake: it was incredibly hot!!!! However, at another time the visit worth it

This place was really neat, they've done such a great job with this archeological site. Best part was that it was free to enter! Maybe because it was free there was no a lot of signage to get there, and even right outside the door you could hardly tell you were there. But no complaints once I was actually in. Very clean, great informational plaques along the way. I liked how you could get so close and e en into some of the tombs. If in Carmona, I would definitely recommend.
