Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you like hiking this is a must! A fairly gentle hike up the river with some more intense sections. As other reviewers mention, you really are wading through the water for most of the journey, up to knee high in some sections. We were here in early June, and I wouldn’t want to make the journey when the water is any higher. *Wear good footwear* that you don’t mind getting wet, as the pebbles of the river can be quite sharp. Trainers or light walking boots would be best. My partner was wearing Vivo Barefoot trainers and his feet were sore by the end. We took nearly 6 hours to make the walk from the road to the first waterfall and back, but if you are fitter and don’t take as many breaks it could be done in less time. There were families with very young children, and older people all trudging up and down the day we went. The views and wild life are stunning. There are no facilities so take water and snacks.

This was real hidden gem. The hike through the river was amazing. Very zen if you arrive early like we did. The little canyons and waterfalls were beautiful. All though the ending is the main attraction it wasn't spectacular. I think its the journey to it that was magical lots of wildlife along the way. Great photo opportunities. However, was very busy as we were returning. Hiking back many tours of people got crowed at points. The river turned murky with all the foot traffic. Good hiking sandles or water shoes needed. Deep in parts and would require good mobility.

The town of Nerja is far too crowded with cars everywhere.
The cave is wonderful and absolutely worth a visit. The museum closes at 4pm, which makes it impossibile to visit both the cave and the museum on a one-day trip

First, you have to walk a ways until you get to the water. It is gravel and dry but keep going and you will reach the river, maybe 20 minutes of walking. Then it is beautiful! We went in the morning, about 9:30am, and very few people were there but it was much busier by the time we turned around. The water is so clear and it was not slippery at all. It was mostly ankle deep with a few spots up to our thighs. Our group was aged 27 to 55, and everyone could do it and had a great time.

Great walk up stream in natural park. You are walking through a river up stream so it's important to wear good footwear and probably bring something waterproof for your valuables in case you drop them. Easily self guidable, you can't go wrong once you're in the park. We walked up to the park from Nerja which is about 30 minutes.

We didn't quite get to the lagoon area because it does get progressively harder. However what we saw was amazing so didn't feel short changed.

When we visited Nerja in January this year the river was bone dry! I mean totally dry, not even a little stream. I presume the other reviewers who say that they saw water in the bed must have visited soon after a rain storm or walked further upstream before it dried out.
However, the lower reaches of the river through the edge of Nerja doe have a nice walkway on the eastern bank which is pleasant during the evening.

Walked the Rio Chillar from Nerja today, it takes just over an hour to reach the scenic part of the walk and a further two hours to reach the waterfall. The walk is mostly in the river walking through stunning gorges,. Suitable footwear is a must, old trainers, enclosed sandles or water shoes. A walking pole is also a good idea.

This river walk is so much fun! Wear a bathing suit or clothing that can get wet. We wore sneakers and socks which was perfect for climbing on the wet rocks. And bring lots of drinking water - the walk from the parking lot to the river is about 25 minutes in the hot sun with little shade. But the walk in the river is cool and shady. We only walked about and hour up the river and an hour back so combined with the walk to a from the parking lot it was about a 3 hour hike. It was one of the highlights of our visit to Spain and my teens loved it!

We did the walk with our family group that ranged in ages from 5 to 70! Everybody had a great time. Well worth the effort. The right footwear is essential and you will get wet. We all bought trainers for €2 the day before - money well spent! Take plenty of water and something to eat half way up. It takes about 1.5hrs to get to the first large pools and amazing gorges/waterfalls. Turn around and walk back after that if you’ve done enough. There is nothing amazing at the end. Just a nice walk from start to finish.
