The scale and history of this place is amazing. Make sure you get the audio guide which although it appears rather antiquated leads you round with loads of information. Take time to walk around the walls and visit the on site Cantina for refreshments

When you are visiting Figueres it is because of Dali's Museum, and maybe not suspecting there is an incredible additional option. This is the castle of Sant Ferran, maybe the largest fortress in Europe. It is an excellent excuse for bringing children also. Despite the...More

Great place to have a wander away from the crowds and imagine what it used to be like. There is a cafe on site.

Leave the crowds visiting the Dali museum behind and visit an amazing historical site. We signed up for the tour that took us around the fort in a jeep, into the dark tunnels and then in a boat through the cistern. It was extremely interesting...More

Big and "abandoned" fortress in city center. Sometimes hard to find direct paths to get down. This district of Alicante is not so charming, althoug it is only few blocks away from Mercado. The castle is interesting and offer some fine views of the city...More

Even if you know nothing about the history of the area, this is a fascinating place to visit. Don't expect a lot of perfectly preserved building though, you're expected to guide yourself around the ruins with the help of an audio-guide. Fascinating (and lovely views...More

Easily accessible on foot only about 15 minutes up hill walk from the Dali museum. Well hidden and easily missed. A huge but magnificent fort that clearly demonstrates the tensions of a national border in the 17th-19th centuries. It's building is explained in an excellent...More
