Worth using from its lower side as it's quite a steep climb back up the streets above. Just be warned though that it's powered by the use of "dirty" water and can be a bit whiffy.

Nice. When you take your ticket, know that this is the SAME ticket for the buses in the city of Fribourg. It is valid not just to take the funiculaire, but you can use it for up to one hour on the buses.

Best exemple of sutenability in Fribourg since already early 20 century!! No fossil energie and no light is use to climb from the lower medieval town to the modern upper-town. It use only the "potential energy" of the used water! Also the old cab is sill mantegned in the original fashion mostly in wood!

Not cheap for a short ride but it was certainly worth it in the heat and the thought of climbing back up the hill made it an easy choice for us! The staff were very friendly. You can sit outside facing up the hill of inside facing down. You buy your ticket before getting on from the machine right besides... More

From the centre to the Old/Low Town ("Basse-Ville). No Luxury, but nevertheless a seldom and exceptional experience (considering the railcar is drawn by pumping the urban waters). The Funiculaire is duly serviced and restored to remain a functional historic tourist attraction. Enjoy the scenary. As a challenging alternative, try descending the xxxx steps instead or (uphill, provided you are in... More

Our hotel proprietress had airly said, 'oh the market is just up the steps', but sh'd neglected to say just how many there were. Hence the need for the funicular. We rode it several times on our tourist ticket, and once up after that had run out (we walked down though). A life (or strictly leg) saver. Very slight odour... More

Everyone we knew in Fribourg said that I had to ride the funiculaire, but, despite the novelty, it didn't offer any special experience or views. What was great, however, was stepping out of it into the quaint lower city. And of course the ride back up makes returning easier. You buy a ticket from the wall-mounted machine (the conductor will... More

While visiting Bas-Ville in Fribourg (old town) one can use either normal bus or funiculare. There is a magnific view on the rocky hill on the other side. Smell there might be unbearable since waste water is used to operate the funiculaire. Price for this short ride is high, especially if you don't have half-fare card (demi-tariff, halbtax). One could... More

While not a huge ride it does come as part of a day ticket on the local tram andbus services. These are a great cheap way to see around Freiburg if you do not have a car. The funicular just goes up and down from the upperlevel down to the riverlevel where you can see more of the old town... More
