Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Stainmore Railway Company is based at Kirkby Stephen East Station. It wasn't a running day when I attended so there was no charge. However, a donation was appreciated. There was a good selection of rolling stock, including two industrial steam locomotives. The museum has a range of interesting exhibits and there is some useful information on former Station Masters. The shop houses a good selection of railway related merchandise, including some second hand books. The staff were volunteers and they were friendly and helpful. There is ample parking.

We went to the 40’s themed day with our three daughters (7,6,3). This was great day out with very friendly staff/volunteers. We rode up and down the rail in different coaches and classes, the guard even let the older girls help him out. They also got to sit in a variety of WW2 military vehicles as well as the learning about the steam train from the driver.

There were lots of people and displays and plenty to learn and see. They also had live music from the period.

We had a great day and would highly recommend.

What a fabulous little railway this is. Very obvious the volunteers work hard restoring and running this living history. Everyone very friendly. Train rides are short but priced accordingly. Great little shop. On the day we visited additional stalls which added. Bonus I got to meet Barras the cat.

As always you get a great welcome. Things have been difficult with Covid etc but starting to get back to normal. All the staff and volunteers have worked really hard while sticking to the regulations.
The shed tours are very informative whether you are an expert or just interested.

I try to visit at least a couple of times a year. This is a great little railway. The buffet is cheap and tasty and the staff are always friendly and polite. I usually try and visit for the Railwayania event which see lots of dealers.

The ride is only short but don’t let that detract from your visit. Highly recommended.

a place full of charm. Such lovely warm and friendly volunteer staff, deeply knowledgeable, and kind. We had a shed tour too which was frankly awesome and a great behind the scenes insight. if you enjoy smaller calmer railways rich in story and heritage you should go for a visit.

We visited during a Model railway show which added a whole extra element for my son. they have a good deal of special events so look them up.

Its been 15 years we have come to visit with the Easter rally event and so much work has been done here and everytime we have had a warm welcome and just relax and take in the scenery and let your mind wander back to the good old years, more so today as of smell and sound of those little model steam engines displayed this weekend.
The early years of coming here, and seeing what now has evolved is really amazing, I do think the volunteers have done an amazing job, we have come and always put a few coins in the box to help things along, maybe have a tea and a cake, in the carriage and always win something on the raffle (this event only).
Its nice to see those lads up to the naffs doing what they love doing and making everyone welcome and there humour between each other is nice to see
Looking in today and I see a few more projects on board that look as if the hard work is still to continue with those carriages
Really do enjoy a wander in here and so much to see and explore about the history of the old railway line

Hazel and the team .... Brilliant keep up the good work see you next year

I visited the other weekend and it was fantastic. Well done to all involved for such a wonderful and friendly place to visit.

In fact I was so impressed I took shares out and will definitely be back to volunteer. Good luck for the future folks.

We went as a party of 6 adults with one 3 year old, and we all found something interesting to look at. The volunteers are really friendly and helpful, toys were produced for our child, and there is a little exhibition as well as static engines on display. The shop is basic, but has some nice things in it and there is plenty of parking too. Worth a look if you are passing.
