This attraction is a non profit making company and is part of our railway heritage which is run by volunteers. We actually only met one volunteer who made us most welcome with his wealth of knowledge. I am not a railway buff but I did enjoy getting up close to the old locomotives and carriages. I have given this a... More

I've got an interest in the old railway line from Barnard Castle to Kirkby Stephen Have walked across some of the viaducts, as well as visited the summit. While I visited, there was a sole volunteer who took the time to show me around. It was great to see the locomotives up close, and be told the stories behind them.... More

We visited on a Sunday while staying in the area. The place was deserted except for a lonely volunteer who was brilliant. She made us feel welcome, took us around the various rooms and let us on the various trains with our 2 year old. He spent quite a while playing with the toy trains and enjoyed running up and... We're always made very welcome. This visit was out of season so not many people there. Plenty of volunteers though. They're doing great work getting ready for the Santa special and laying new rails etc.

If time is an essential, find a bus. If you absolutely need a seat, find a bus. If you are a social phobic, find a bus. Otherwise, enjoy the ride.

A railway preservation centre with refreshments available, picnic area and shop + opportunity to ride along a section of railway line at certain times of the year - the site is open every weekend. An added attraction is the Northern Viaduct Trust scenic walk from Kirkby Stephen to Merrygill (and back) along the former Stainmore railway trackbed with wonderful scenery... More

Very interesting small-scale heritage line, with helpful and friendly staff. Spent an enjoyable couple of hours here with the kids on a steam day.

Lovely restored station building, with shop, buffet on train carriage, mini steam engines for wee ones and lots to see and do. Great fun for all the family.

We visited here yesterday. This was the second year we have been to their railway exhibition, as it's a lovely day out, set in beautiful countryside. The people are also very friendly. There were a selection of things to do, such as "be a driver for a fiver" where you got to drive a diesel engine. Also stand on the... More
