Thetford's Ancient House has recently benefitted from a £1.6 million renovation, which has gone towards conserving the Grade I listed Tudor merchant's house and creating up-to-date displays.

The atmospheric crooked house tells the remarkable story of Thetford and the Brecks. Discover rich collections alongside audio guides, films and animations.

Meet local people from Thetford's past, from the revolutionary philosopher Thomas Paine to the Sikh hero Maharajah Duleep Singh and from rabbit warreners to railway workers.

Take time out in the re-planted garden and don't miss the brand new museum shop in its oak pavilion. Allow about an hour and a half for a visit.

we really enjoyed our visit, the girls were interested and engaged throughout. The smell activity was available on our day which involved smelling a pot in each room and trying to identify the different things on a check list provided e.g lavender or toffee apple. My granddaughters particularly enjoyed dressing up in the period clothes and the delving into the... More

Following an amazing refurb, returning the main rooms as far as possible, to their original state, this small museum is truly worth a visit. Very friendly and highly knowledgeable staff will sow you around or answer any questions you may have, and you really are made to feel welcome. The atmosphere is very intimate and personal. you certainly do not... More

I love the museum at Thetford they put on a variety of events throughout the year. Always worth a visit, they have a Saxon broach in there that I found in my garden many years ago. I like to pop in from time to time just to see it and have a wonder round the museum.

Visited a few days ago and really enjoyed the displays and the research the staff/curators had done into the history of the house and former residents living there. Very interesting section on local flint working industry and a kitchen in the style that it might have been in WWl when a former resident of the house lived there - a... More

Pretty good just popped in on our way past and was actually pretty good. A little overpriced for what was actually there but the kids enjoyed it especially the spinners. According to friends they do do special days at cheap rates or free. I must have gone on the most expensive day. Defo a must see and the leaping hare... More

Visited here late in the afternoon with a friend. The staff were very welcoming and gave us a brief overview of the house and history of Thetford. Thanks! We then were left to wander round this fabulous house and enjoy the exhibits. Plenty of opportunities to 'dress up' in period costumes for our amusement (and our Instagram followers) I don't... Went to Thetford on New year's ever as a substitute for closed English Heritage site nearby. As we walked from leaving our car (with permission) at Thomas Paine hotel; my friend and I came across the Ancient House museum. Excellent exhibits, friendly & helpful staff. Can't fault them on any aspect. Even the pollarded hornbeams in the small garden were... More
